Deol made his debut in the film, Betaab (1982) opposite fellow debutante Amrita Singh, for which he was nominated for the Filmfare Best Actor award. He was at the peak of his career in 1990 when he won the Filmfare award for Best Actor and the National Film Award for the film, Ghayal.

His portrayal of a lawyer in the film, Damini (1993), earned him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, Sunny Deol contested from Gurdaspur on the BJP ticket. He defeated the Congress candidate Sunil Jhakhar and became Gurdaspur MP.
