HC seeks Centre's response on PIL to allow Sikhs to carry kirpan, kara in public places

The Delhi High Court has sought views of the Centre, Delhi Government and the police on allowing Sikhs to carry Kirpan and wear karra at public spaces. This is sequel to a Public Interest Litigation filed by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee seeking clarification on denial of fundamental rights under Article 25.

On August 15, an 18-year-old Sikh youth was denied entry into Red Fort to hear Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech on Independence Day as he was wearing kara and Kripan.

The Chief Justice, Rajendra Menon, and Justice, V K Rao, have issued notices to the Union Home and defence Ministries besides the Delhi government and the police to seek their response on the plea by March 27, 2019. The Central government standing counsel, Ripudaman Singh Bhardwaj, has accepted the notice. He told that he would file a counter affidavit before next hearing. -PTC NEWS
