Hockey Olympic Qualifiers; Rani's goal carries India through despite 4-1 win by the US A goal by skipper Rani Rampal helped India secure a berth in 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Though India lost the second match 1-4 but it managed to qualify on better goal difference. India had won the first game 5-1 and on aggregate India beat USA 6-5. It appeared all lost for India as the US women's hockey team, played super hockey in the first half, out playing the home team in all departments of the game. This outstanding performance helped the US to take a comfortable 4-0 lead in first 30 minutes of the game. India, however, salvaged some pride and its honour by playing a goalless third quarter and in the fourth and final quarter it got an all important goal through skipper Rani. The US girls playing in India for the first time were perhaps troubled by the humidity. The may be the reason for them to slow down the pace of the game in the third quarter. And this helped India to come back. Though India forced four penalty corners but it failed to make use of any. Gurjit Kaur's flickers, all grounders, were well blocked by the US goalkeeper Kalsey Bing, who was declared man of the match. USA started well, attacking Indian citadel right from the beginning. In the fifth minute, the US took the lead through Amanda Magadan, who later scored her second goal in the 28th minute to make the score 4-0. In between skipper Kathleen Sharkle, who had another outstanding game, scored the second goal in the 14th minute before Alyssa Parker made it 3-0 in the 20th minute. USA needed four goal difference to force a penalty shootout or a five goal difference win to make it to Tokyo. But Rani saved the day for her team and India. -PTC News-
