Rescue workers continued their desperate search for survivors on Sunday; two days after a powerful earthquake hit Indonesia.  It triggered a 10-feet high tsunami. It killed more than 820 people and more than 550 people are badly injured.

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia on Friday. Following which water smashed into buildings and swept away homes in the PALU, a coastal city. It is a home to 350,000 people. Also Read: At least 400 killed as earthquake, tsunami hit Indonesia’s Sulawesi island

Indonesian Disaster Management Agency told that the death toll has crossed 820 on Sunday morning. Many people are still buried under the debris of houses and other buildings.

They told that the electricity and communications have been cut off. It is making it difficult for them to assess the damage in Palu. The rescue team is finding it hard to reach to the people living in remote areas.

The Palu airport has also been shut down because of which the rescue team has to make their way by road. The government authorities have urged the residents of the affected areas to not to go inside their houses. They should sleep away from buildings, fields and roads as there is a danger from aftershocks. Also Read: 82 dead after Magnitude 7 earthquake hits Indonesia

The local hospital is also damaged. The medical staff is now treating injured residents outside the building. The hospital authorities are seeking help from the public and other cities. They have requested tents, medicine, canvas, nurses, etc.

The nightmare started on Friday when the tremors were felt at 3:00 p.m., 56 km north of Palu. Up to 3 hours before the major earthquake, small earthquakes measuring 4.4 or larger were recorded.

Then, the severe tremor of 7.5-magnitude was recorded. The series of aftershocks were also recorded. Just after 12 minutes, a 5.8- magnitude hit the island. They triggered a 10-feet high tsunami that hit beaches in the cities of Palu and Donggala. -PTC NEWS
