Shimla: Intense cold wave conditions persisted in most parts of Himachal Pradesh today even as the weatherman warned of heavy snowfall at isolated places in mid hills tomorrow and higher hills on January 6 and 7. The high altitude tribal areas groaned under biting cold wave conditions with minimum temperatures ranging between minus 8 and minus 15 degrees while Kalpa and Keylong in tribal Kinnaur and Lahaul and Spiti districts recorded a low of minus 3.8 and minus 3.1 degrees. Kothi neat Rohtang pass gauged 3 cm of snow while Kalpa and Keylong had 2 cm of precipitation and Manali and Saluni in Chamba district got 7 mm and 3 mm of rains. All natural sources of water in tribal areas and other higher hills were frozen, resulting in sharp reduction in discharge of water in snow-fed Sutlej, Ravi and Beas rivers, affecting hydropower generation. The key tourist resort of Manali and Sundernagar shivered at 3 degrees while Bhuntar recorded a minimum of 3.4 degrees, followed by Solan 4, Shimla 4.2, Palampur 6, Una 7, Nahan 8.4 and Dharamsala 9.2 degrees Celsius. The MeT office has predicted rains or thunderstorm in lower hills and rains or snowfall in mid and higher hills for next three days upto January 8 and dry weather in the region thereafter.   - By PTI-
