The CBI Special Court has remanded former Union minister P Chidambaram in 14-day judicial custody till September 19 in the INX Media money laundering case. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal opposed CBI’s plea for judicial custody saying there was no scope of Chidambaram tampering with evidence. "I am willing to go to Enforcement Directorate custody if they want, but why judicial custody? Either I surrender, let ED take custody, I don't have a problem," the senior advocate reportedly argued. https://twitter.com/ANI/status/1169584435479531520 CBI pressed the case for judicial custody on the grounds that the accused wields considerable influence. Earlier, the Supreme Court rejected Chidambaram’s anticipatory bail plea in the INX Media money-laundering case. On August 20, the former Union minister filed a petition against the Delhi High Court order rejecting his anticipatory bail. https://twitter.com/ANI/status/1169597074897195008 The SC stated that the court should peruse the case diary of the CBI and ED for this high-profile economic offence. According to the court, the investigating agency has to be given enough freedom to conduct its investigation and an anticipatory bail granted to Chidambaram at this point would get in the way of a fair probe. https://www.ptcnews.tv/inx-media-case-supreme-court-dismisses-appeal-filed-by-p-chidambaram-against-the-delhi-high-court-order/ On May 15, 2017, the CBI registered an FIR against Chidambaram for alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance provided to INX Media and receiving overseas funds amounting to Rs 305 crore in 2007 during his tenure as finance minister. Chidambaram’s dramatic arrest on August 21 had officials scaling the walls of his residence to gain access to him. -PTC News-
