Amid coronavirus crisis, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday postponed the Indian Premier League (IPL) indefinitely, a report suggested. The IPL 2020, scheduled to start on March 29, was earlier postponed till April 15. With the nationwide lockdown, enforced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fight the pandemic in India, extended till May 3, the board has postponed the rich cash-league until the further notice.

The decision comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the extension of the lockdown till May 3. The news agency PTI reported that the BCCI had informed all the franchises about the postponement of the tournament. publive-image "Yes, the BCCI has intimated us that IPL has been postponed for the time being but they are hopeful of finding a window later this year as and when things normalise," a veteran franchise official told PTI. It is quite understood that BCCI was waiting for the government directive and once the lockdown was extended till May 3 on Tuesday, there seemed no possibility of holding the IPL during its April-May window. publive-image BCCI President Sourav Ganguly had made it clear that the game cannot be a priority amid the coronavirus crisis that the country is facing currently. India currently has over 11,000 positive cases with over 377 deaths, making it impossible for the government to lift any of the restrictions enforced last month.
