18th Asian Games: Japan sinks Korea, enters women's hockey final

18th Asian Games: Japan sinks Korea, enters women's hockey final Japan sunk Korea 2-0 to qualify for the gold medal match in women's section of hockey competition in the 18th Asian Games on Wednesday. Koreans owe a grouse to Japan for preventing its teams, both men and women, a chance to have a go at the gold medal in the Asian Games in Jakarta, Yesterday, Japan beat Korea in men's section to qualify for semis thus eliminating its opponents from the medals round. In a fast paced game, the Japanese took their chances in the last and fourth quarter, scoring twice, first through an indirect conversion of a penalty corner, and again in the last minute by making full advantage of goalkeeper free Koreans. Akiko Oto and Minami Shimzu were the scorers for Japan, After conceding goal in the 49th minute, Koreans in a desperate gamble had withdrawn goalkeeper five minutes from the final whistle to add extra punch to its attack for seeking an equaliser. While contesting a last minute penalty corner award, Japan mounted a counter attack and saw Minami greeted by an empty goal. Though Japan is already qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games as a host, it will now challenge the winner of the other semi final between India and China for the gold medal match on Friday. -PTC NEWS
