LPU: Students clash with cops, set ablaze property, block highway

After student went on the rampage on Sunday evening heavy police force has been deployed at Lovely Professional University (LPU). The police arrested a student from Jalandhar Cantonment railway station in a case of alleged extortion-cum-mobile phone theft. The students started protesting as a police team reached the campus near Phagwara to recover the mobile phone from the hosteler's room, which he allegedly used for making extortion calls. Around midnight a dharna was staged on National Highway-1 in front of the university gate. The matter turned worse as four of the nearly 2,000 students, who had blocked the highway, were reportedly hit by a speeding car being driven on the wrong lane. The irate students first set the car afire and then moved towards Chaheru police post in front of the campus and set a parked police vehicle ablaze. The police then registered a case of attempt to murder against the car driver and arrested him. It all began as an LPU student from Tamil Nadu reportedly lodged a complaint with the Jalandhar police alleging that an unknown person had stolen his mobile phone and was now demanding Rs 35,000 for returning it. “We have deployed adequate police force. The students who had got injured were rushed to a private hospital yesterday and are doing fine,” the Phagwara SP Parminder Singh Bhandal said. The LPU authorities said they would release a statement on the issue at 3 pm. -PTC News
