Chandigarh, August 10 – Former minister Bikram Singh Majitha today said the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) stand that Congress legislators were using SHOs to commit atrocities had been vindicated with chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh giving a clean chit to the SHOs even before the State DGP could hold an inquiry against them.
Reacting to the CM’s statement ruling out transfer of any SHO and stating that he had approached the DGP to complain against officials to avert being exposed of indulging in registering false cases during SAD-BJP government, Mr Majithia said nothing could be further from the truth. “I would like to say at the onset that I do no fear any inquiry, even if it is a friendly commission which has been given a pre-determined mandate which was also announced publically by the chief minister. This mandate is to take on and target Akali leaders”.
Stating that he was ready to accept any mistake with folded hands in case there was any conclusive proof of misdoing by him, he said the State should not however indulge in witch-hunting. “The State is duty bound to hold fair and transparent inquiries which alone will hold water when put under test”, he added.
As regards the issue of transfer of SHOs, Mr Majithia said the chief minister’s statement indicated that Congress legislators had exerted pressure on him and this was why he had ruled out any inquiry against the SHOs. Stating that it was the duty of the opposition to raise concern wherever it felt injustice was being meted out to the people, he said it was also the duty of the chief minister to respect this concern and examine all issues raised by the opposition. “The manner in which the CM has disrespected the people who have approached the government through the SAD is not good for a healthy democracy”, he added.
Regarding the visit by an SAD delegation to the DGP to apprise him of false cases registered against common persons at the instance of several Congress legislators and leaders in Gurdaspur parliamentary constituency, Mr Majitha said “we approached the DGP and submitted a complete list of cases to him lest it be said tomorrow that we did not approach the government. Now that the chief minister himself has take on the responsibility of deciding not to act on our complaint we will approach the courts and demand a CBI inquiry into the entire list of atrocities conducted at the instance of Congress leaders by taking the help of unscrupulous SHOs”.
Speaking about the accusation of tyranny made against him by the CM and allegations that he had got the maximum false cases registered in Majithia during SAD-BJP rule, Mr Majithia said this was also not true. “I don’t need any certificate from the Congress. I have got the mandate from the people. The people’s court is all important. The people decided in my favour in the last assembly election despite several repeated visits by Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi to campaign against me. Even when you (Capt Amarinder Singh) won the Amritsar parliamentary seat in 2014 you lost from the Majithia assembly segment by 21,000 votes. If I had been registering false case and terrorizing my constituents this would have never happened”.
Stating that the chief minister should rise above narrow political considerations and be non-partisan always, the Akali leader said “please treat all Punjabis equally and ask your legislators also to do the same. Please don’t discriminate against anyone simply because he chose to exercise his franchise as per his free will. Please treat all complaints with the respect they deserve”.
