Malaysia to abolish death penalty says, Minister
Malaysia has now joined the continuously growing league of nations that have abolished or are in the process of abolishing Death Penalty. One hundred and three countries have already abolished the death penalty.
Now, Malaysia’s government has decided to abolish the death penalty. Currently, capital punishment is given for murder, kidnapping, possession of firearms and drug trafficking, among other heinous crimes.
Malaysia is following the legacy of British Rule in Death Penalty i.e. it is carried out by hanging. The government now wants to put a full stop on the practice of the death penalty.
After scraping out the penalty, Malaysia would be tagged as one of those few Muslim majority countries to abolish the penalty.
The government was getting a strong domestic opposition to the practice and that is why the government decided to abolish it. The advocates supported the decision. According to them, capital punishment was unimaginably cruel. The death penalty was not serving the purpose it was intended to. People were still committing crimes even at the threat of dying at the hands of the government.
