Manipur Elections 2022: BJP workers ransack party office after being denied ticket

Manipur Assembly Elections 2022: Bharatiya Janata Party's office in Imphal was allegedly ransacked by party supporters after some of them were denied tickets to contest upcoming Manipur elections. The security has been tightened at the office after the incident. The BJP's candidate list for assembly elections in Manipur has left many disappointed and their anger manifested in form of resignations and burning effigies of party leaders. As per its candidate list, the party denied the tickets to two sitting MLAs. Meanwhile, the sitting Chief Minister N Biren Singh will contest the election from Heingang and PWD minister in the government Thangom Biswajit Singh will contest from Thongju. The Modi government has ensured that Manipur has a stable government and that the region’s development and peace would continue,” Bhupendra Yadav, the BJP’s Manipur election in-charge, had remarked. The NDA, led by the BJP, currently holds a majority in the assembly. There are 30 BJP MLAs, three NPP MLAs, four NPF MLAs and three independents. Leading the NDA government, Biren Singh formed the government in Manipur on March 15, 2017. However, it received a huge setback in June 2020, when nine MLAs, including ministers, resigned their support, bringing the government to a minority. Within a week of the central leadership intervening, four NPP MLAs returned to the NDA fold, preventing the government from collapsing. Manipur will hold elections in two phases, on February 27 and March 3, for 60 Assembly seats. The results will be released on 10 March.
