Imphal (Manipur), February 27: Just a day ahead of the first phase of Manipur Assembly elections, Janata Dal (United) candidate from Kshetrigao, Rojit Wahengbam was attacked by unidentified individuals. Wahengbam is said to be stable now and is currently admitted to ICU. "We do not know who tried to kill him but they should be caught. He was targeted out of political rivalry," said Wahengbam's mother Surbala Devi. JD (U) candidate shot ahead of Manipur polls According to police, the JD (U) candidate was shot at 11:30 p.m. while meeting with party supporters in Naharup Makhapat. His driver Sapam Ronaldo said that two assailants came on a scooter and shot him. They managed to escape even after being chased by an escort team, reported the Indian Express. JD (U) candidate shot ahead of Manipur polls The police have filed an FIR in connection with the incident. Notably, the high-octane poll campaigning in Manipur came to an end on Saturday, setting the stage for the first phase of Assembly elections in the state. As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seeks to retain power, Congress is pinning hope on its six-party coalition to oust the Biren Singh government. JD (U) candidate shot ahead of Manipur polls Polling for the 60-member Manipur Assembly will take place in two phases on February 28 and March 5, respectively. As many as 38 seats will go to the polls in the first phase and the voting in 22 constituencies will take place in the second phase.
