Mayawati ‘unfit for public life’: Jaitley after BSP chief’s attack on PM Modi

BSP chief Mayawati has launched a scathing personal attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he accused her of “shedding crocodile tears” over the gang rape in Rajasthan’s Alwar. Prime Minister Modi’s party, the BJP, was quick with a strong reaction, saying Mayawati has “stooped to an all-time low” and that she was not suitable for public life. In an interview to news agency ANI, the Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati accused PM Modi of playing “dirty politics” on the Alwar gang rape case. “Narendra Modi was silent on Alwar gang rape case. He’s trying to play dirty politics over it so that his party can benefit in the elections. It is extremely shameful. How can he respect others’ sisters and wives when he has left his own wife for political gains?” ANI quoted Mayawati as saying. “I have also come to know that married women are now trying to make sure that their husbands do not go near Narendra Modi because they fear that their husbands may also leave them like Modi left his wife,” the BSP chief added. Her governance, ethics and discourse stoops to an all-time low. Her personal attack today on the Prime Minister exposes her as unfit for public life,” Jaitley tweeted on Monday. Modi on Sunday had hit out at Mayawati over Alwar gang rape case and challenged her party to withdraw support from the Congress government in the western state. The woman’s husband had said she was raped on April 26 and the police were informed on April 30, but a first information report (FIR) was filed only on May 7. The allegations of police negligence had led to protests across the state as the BJP accused the Congress government of hushing up the matter. Her party has given support to the Congress in Rajasthan, although they have no arrangement in any state for the Lok Sabha election this year. She also slammed the Prime Minister on Monday for showing false sympathy for Dalits and said that his words rang hollow. “If Modi had genuinely been a backward caste person, he would not have objected to bungalows owned by Dalit and OBC people. He changes his caste every day for electoral gains,” she added.
