Punjab Congress Chief calls on Union Commerce and Industry Minister

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President and Member of Parliament from Gurdaspur Mr. Sunil Jakhar today met the Union Commerce and Industry Minister Mr. Suresh Prabhu in New Delhi and sought union government’s assistance to promote industry in states in general and border districts of Punjab in particular. Mr. Jakhar while briefing about the new industrial policy being implemented by the Punjab government during his meeting with the Union Minister, Mr. Suresh Prabhu said that the industry friendly policy has been enforced by Captain Government so that the industries can be promoted in the state. Mr. Jakhar said that the state government has made great efforts for the industrial development of the state and the big industrial houses are coming forward for investment in Punjab. But the state needs more cooperation from central government to promote industry in the state. While discussing about the issue of Gurdaspur and Pathankot based industry Mr. Jakhar asked the union Minister to established more industry in his constituency so that young people can get new employment opportunities. He also brought the issue of industrialization of Gurdaspur and Batala to the attention of the Union Minister and demanded the establishment of industry in Pathankot too. Likewise, Mr. Jakhar called for the up-gradation of Rail Coach Factory at Kapurthala and Rail Diesel Engine factory in Patiala and said that this would benefit the state's economy. The Punjab Pradesh Congress chief also demanded from Union Minister to give GST exemption for cotton industry to encourage crop diversification in the state. While raising the issue of Basmati industry of state Mr. Jakhar said that Basmati of Punjab has GI (Geographical identification) tag and it is highly demanded commodity in international trade market.
