274 supporters of controversial Rampal seek unconditional apology for contempt of court

PTC Web Desk: In a significant development, 274 supporters of controversial figure, Rampal, convicted for contempt of court, have sought an unconditional apology from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The supporters, acknowledging their mistake, assured the court that they would not repeat the offense in the future. The High Court accepted their apology and issued a warning not to engage in similar actions again.

The case dates back to December 2018, when Hisar's Sessions Judge convicted Rampal and several of his associates on charges of murder, conspiracy, and kidnapping, sentencing them to life imprisonment. Following the sentencing, 285 of Rampal's supporters distributed pamphlets claiming that the verdict marked a "black day" for the nation's judiciary. These pamphlets were sent to High Court judges, prompting the court to take suo-motu cognizance of the matter.

As a result, the supporters were charged with criminal contempt of court. In 2020, they filed affidavits acknowledging their mistake and requesting an unconditional apology. When the case was resumed for hearing, the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the supporters to submit fresh apologies. Subsequently, they filed new affidavits assuring that they would not engage in similar behaviour in the future and would uphold the respect of the judiciary.

The High Court accepted their apology and granted them relief, warning them against committing such acts again. However, it is important to note that while criminal contempt proceedings were initiated against Rampal's 285 supporters, 11 of them have since passed away.
