PTC News Desk: At least 10 people lost their lives in a landslide that hit Mirik in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district. The Dudia Iron Bridge — a key link between Mirik and Kurseong, both major towns and tourist spots — has also collapsed.

Heavy rainfall triggered another landslide in Hussain Khola, located along National Highway 110 near Kurseong. The video shows several stretches of road, from village routes to highways, buried under mud and debris.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed the region under a red alert, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar until Sunday morning. A well-marked low-pressure system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rain to sub-Himalayan West Bengal through Monday morning. The IMD bulletin also warned of continued downpours in Alipurduar, Darjeeling’s neighbouring district, until then.

Continuous overnight rain has led to large-scale waterlogging in parts of Jalpaiguri district, especially in Malbazar. The Teesta, Mal, and other hill rivers are flowing above the danger level, raising fears of flooding.

The IMD further noted that light to moderate rainfall is expected to continue across most of these districts until Monday morning.

“The well-marked low-pressure over west Jharkhand and adjoining areas of south Bihar, southeast Uttar Pradesh and north Chhattisgarh is likely to move north-northeastwards towards Bihar, and weaken gradually into a low-pressure area by Saturday evening,” it said.
