Delhi rains: Woman, three-year-old son fall into open drain in Delhi; mother found holding son's hand
Delhi rains: In a heart-wrenching incident, a 23-year-old woman and her three-year-old son died after falling into an open drain during heavy rain in Delhi. Deceased Tanuja Bisht and her son Priyansh were returning from the weekly market in Ghazipur when it started raining. Due to waterlogging, she could not spot the open drain and fell into it along with her son. Their bodies were found about 500 metre away, with Tanuja still holding her son's hand.
The family said a quicker rescue operation might have saved them. Govind Singh, Tanuja's husband, who works in Noida, lamented the lack of swift action and cited recurring incidents of negligence. Tanuja's uncle, Harish Rawat, reported that rescue teams arrived, but lacked proper equipment, delaying the recovery.
Local residents flayed the civic authorities for ignoring complaints about the open drain, which had been left uncovered for three months and consistently overflowed during rains. Residents have repeatedly raised the issue with officials, but no action was taken.
Meanwhile, seven deaths have been reported in Delhi following the heavy rain so far. The Met Department has predicted heavy rainfall for today also.
