Fresh violence in Manipur: Three killed as attackers breach 'buffer zone'
Fresh violence in Manipur: Three people, including a father-son duo, were killed in fresh violence in Manipur's Bishnupur district early Saturday morning, according to witness accounts.
Suspected militants stormed Ukha Tampak village near Kwakta in Bishnupur at 2 a.m. and began firing indiscriminately, according to police sources.
The shooting killed two men, a father and son, as well as another person in an adjoining house. They were unarmed villagers watching over their homes.
The three were gunned down while sleeping and afterwards slashed with swords, according to police, who added that the accused were from Churachandpur.
The attackers were able to breach the buffer zone, which was patrolled by central security forces, according to police sources.
The Manipur Police said on Friday that joint forces launched search operations in vulnerable and fringe areas of the conflict-torn state and destroyed seven illegal bunkers after new violence erupted in several districts.
A 35-year-old woman was injured late Thursday in an exchange of fire between suspected gunmen and security forces at Terakhongsangbi in Bishnupur.
The woman, named Aribam Wahida Bibi, suffered a bullet injury to her hand and is being treated at an Imphal hospital, he said.
