Lawyer attempts to throw shoe at CJI Gavai, says 'Won't tolerate insult to Sanatana'

PTC News Desk: Dramatic scenes unfolded in Supreme Court after a lawyer attempted to throw a shoe at the Chief Justice of India BR Gavai during a hearing. While the accused was being escorted out of the courtroom, he screamed, “India will not tolerate the insult of Sanatan Dharma.”

Unfazed by the shocking development in the courtroom, Chief Justice Gavai said, "I am the last person to be affected by such things", and continued the hearing.

The incident follows Chief Justice's controversial remark 'go and ask the deity yourself' that received massive backlash, while hearing a plea linked to the restoration of a damaged Vishnu idol in Madhya Pradesh.

After the incident, he remarked, "Don't get distracted by all this. These things do not affect me. Continue with the hearing."

The accused has been identified as Kishore Rakesh who has been a member of the Bar Association since 2011. “The act appears to have been in response to the Chief Justice’s deity remarks. I strongly condemn this incident and urge that strict action be taken against the accused,” Supreme Court lawyer Rohit Pandey said.

While his intention behind targeting the Chief Justice is not known, security agencies are questioning him to find out more.

Senior jurist Indira Jaising said the incident must be thoroughly investigated. "The lawyer must be named and legal action taken against him. This appears to be a blatant casteist attack on the Supreme Court of India. It deserves to be condemned by all judges of the Supreme Court by a united press statement that ideological attacks will not be tolerated by the court. Befitting the court's dignity, the CJI Gavai went about judicial work with no visible disturbance," she said in a post on X.
