Maharashtra: 30 students taken in after suspected food poisoning

Bhandara, August 25: In an unfortunate incident, around thirty students of an ashram school located in Bhandara district of eastern Maharashtra were admitted to the hospital due to suspected food poisoning. The incident unfolded at Yerali Ashram School situated in Tumsar town on Thursday, as confirmed by an official source.

Bhandara District Health Officer, Milind Somkuwar, reported that a group of students from the ashram school complained of severe symptoms including vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever on Thursday. In response, the district health department swiftly mobilized a team to examine a total of 325 students who resided in the school hostel.

Of the examined students, approximately thirty individuals were subsequently admitted to the sub-district hospital located in Tumsar. Addressing the situation, Somkuwar expressed their suspicion that the students' illnesses were a result of food poisoning linked to the meals served at the hostel. He further assured that the students' conditions have stabilized and they are expected to be discharged shortly.

In a proactive approach, the health department has taken samples of both the food and water served at the hostel for rigorous testing. This step is aimed at identifying the exact cause behind the outbreak and preventing any potential recurrence.

Ashram schools represent residential educational institutions that provide education up to the secondary level, primarily catering to children from tribal communities. The incident highlights the need for stringent measures to ensure the safety and well-being of students in such residential setups.
