Manipur violence: Total curfew reimposed in Imphal West, East after fresh clashes
Fresh clashes in Manipur : Recent violence, arson, and chaos have gripped various districts in Manipur, including Churachandpur, Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Tengnoupal, and Kangpokpi, over the past few days intensifying the situation across nation.
In the recent update, curfew has been reimposed in Imphal West and Imphal East after clashes between security personnel and locals in Churachandpur in Manipur on Thursday.
The fresh clashes broke out when a large group of locals of the Meitei community attempted to move protest towards Churanchandpur from Bishnupur and were stopped by the security personnel of Assam Rifles, Border Security Force and Rapid Action Force personnel in order to preserve law and order in the area.
The Kuki-Zo community attempted to move hold a burial service for 35 people who died in the ethnic strife in Manipur at Lamka town in Churachandpur district on Thursday.
However, the situation went out of control and group of locals crossed the barricades as crowd attempted to break the barriers and tried to pelt stones at the secuirty forces, the forces responded with tear gas shelling. The crowd was then brought under control and dispersed from the area.
The demand for inclusion of the Meitei community, comprising 53 per cent of Manipur's population and predominantly residing in the Manipur Valley, in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list seems to be the immediate trigger for the ongoing ethnic unrest. However, beneath this proximate cause lies a simmering anger fueled by multiple factors.
Additionally, there is a pressing issue of land scarcity in Manipur, leading to significant tensions among various communities. As the tribal village populations grow, they naturally expand into the surrounding forest areas they consider historically and ancestrally theirs. However, this clashes with the government's perspective, causing disputes over land usage and rights.
