Modified bus without emergency exit turns death trap in Jaisalmer, 21 killed in fire so far

PTC Web Desk: A devastating bus fire near Thaiyat village in Jaisalmer has once again highlighted the dangers of illegal vehicle modifications and the absence of emergency exits in public transport. At least 21 passengers lost their lives and 16 others sustained severe burn injuries when a private bus travelling from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur went up in flames on Tuesday afternoon.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire spread rapidly after a loud explosion was heard inside the vehicle. When passengers tried to flee, they found the only exit door jammed, forcing many to smash windows and jump out to save themselves. An excavator had to be called in to break open the door, but by the time help arrived, the flames had consumed most of the bus.

Officials suspect that a short circuit may have triggered the blaze. The bus, which had undergone unauthorised modifications, reportedly contained inflammable materials that intensified the fire. A forensic investigation is underway to determine the exact cause.

The tragedy occurred near the Longewala War Museum, a site commemorating the 1971 Indo-Pak war. The bus was carrying 57 passengers, including women and children. Several victims were charred beyond recognition, and DNA testing will be used for identification.

Local villagers and passersby were the first to respond, soon joined by personnel from the 12th RAPID Division of the Indian Army, who brought excavators and water tankers to control the blaze before police and fire units reached the site.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma expressed profound grief over the loss of lives. “The Jaisalmer bus fire incident is extremely painful. I have directed officials to ensure the best medical care for the injured and extend all possible help to the victims’ families,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Local MLA Pratap Puri confirmed that the bus had been modified without safety compliance, leading to a dangerously narrow exit route. “It seems a short circuit and gas leak from the AC worsened the fire. The bus had only one small exit, which proved fatal,” he said.

Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar, who visited the site, said, “This is one of the most horrific incidents I have ever seen. DNA sampling will be conducted for the identification of the deceased.”
