SC to hear plea seeking ban on websites defaming Sikhs, hearing scheduled after eight weeks

PTC News Desk: The Supreme Court has taken note of the plea seeking ban on the websites that display jokes portraying the 'sardar' community as “persons of low intellect, stupid and foolish”. The apex court will hear the matter after eight weeks.

The bench comprising Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan described the matter of utmost importance.

“You prepare a small compilation so that it becomes easier to go through it. It is an important matter. You have already got the suggestions. You can consolidate them,” the bench said.

During the hearing, petitioner Harvinder Chowdhury highlighted the grievances of Sikh women who were ridiculed for their attire, besides showcasing the predicament faced by children bullied in schools.

The petitioner said that she would consolidate her suggestions and that of Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee and file a short compilation. During the hearing, the petitioner highlighted an incident wherein a boy allegedly ended his life owing to bullying in school, referring to an act of virtual bullying.

The plea sought banning of such websites spreading jokes on Sikhs for violating the fundamental right to life and to live with dignity guaranteed under the Constitution.
