UP nurse demands Rs 5,100 bribe to give baby, probe ordered as infant dies
PTC News Desk: A newborn baby died when a nurse at a community health centre (CHC) in UP's Mainpuri allegedly left him on a table, barely wrapped in a cloth, for around 40 minutes because "the family couldn't pay Rs 5,100 bribe".
Dr RC Gupta, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), stated that the family's claim that the nurse refused to release the infant despite their continuous pleadings resulted in the child's death.
"The family members claimed they repeatedly pleaded with the nurse to give them the baby, but she refused, resulting in the infant's death," said a government official.
By the time the family could arrange the money, the newborn's condition had deteriorated, and he died on the way to another medical facility, according to the family.
The CMO), stated on Monday that a three-member panel has been tasked with investigating the matter. The role of an ASHA (accredited social health activist) worker is also under scrutiny. If negligence is found, action will be taken against those involved."
Sujit Kumar, resident of Anoha Patara, filed a complaint with local officials and the state government, claiming that his wife, Sanjali, was admitted to the CHC hospital in Karhal on September 18. Sujit claimed nurse Jyoti mishandled the situation after his wife gave birth to a healthy child on September 19.
The family also stated that when the delivery was delayed, they asked the ASHA worker to contact a doctor. The ASHA worker informed them that "Jyoti was a doctor," but they found that "Jyoti was a nurse."
