Odisha Hockey World League Final :Holland pips England in the losing quarter-finalist game: European champions Holland had a solace as they edged out England 1-0 to avoid the wooden spoon in a rain-soaked losing quarter-finalist game in Odisha Hockey World League Final at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar today.
With this win Holland took the seventh position while England finished eighth and last.
In the last edition of the World League Holland had finished fourth while England were placed sixth. Holland were the winners of the first edition of the World League Final.
Playing before a nearly empty Stadium, the European champions got the all important goal in the 42nd minute when Mirco Pruijser, one of top scorers of the tournament, scored from a goalmouth melee.
The game was slowed down because of continuous drizzle that made the ball movement difficult.
England had their chances as they earned two penalty corners but failed to make use of any of the two. England did withdraw its goalkeeper in the 56th minute but that too, did not work. In fact Holland were unlucky not to increase their tally as Van Dam missed a sitter after dodging past the entire defence.
