Advertisment
Olympic champions reiterated its supremacy as hockey nation of the Americas. It not only a hockey double - winning both men and women crowns - in Pan Am Games Lima 2019 but also assured its teams, both men and women, a place in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Canada that had come here with high hopes, however, had to take the consolation of winning a "double" but of Silver medals. While women lost to Argentina 5-1, men did little better to end with a 2-5 defeat at the hands of defending Olympic champions. It was not Canada's day. One precious moment made a huge difference. It was the award of a second penalty corner to Canada with the score reading 2-1 in favor of Argentina. Canadians failed to stop the penalty corner push that led to a swift counter-attack by Argentina and Martin Fereirio made no mistake. After conceding this goal, Canadians turned jittery.publive-image Though they kept on fighting the complexion of the game changed so much that eight minutes from the final whistle Canadian skipper Scott Tupper who was the hero of the semi-final against Chile got a yellow card. His ouster proved disastrous as Argentina scored its fifth and final goal during his absence from the field. The time the scorer was Lucas Martinez. Though Scott Tuppe had continued from where he left on Friday with a brilliant flick into the roof of the net from the first penalty corner to put Canada ahead in the 16th minute. The game was even and both teams were playing to their plan. Canada looked more aggressive and better organized in its offense and had equal if not more chances of scoring. But experience makes a difference. After conceding lead in the 16th minute, Argentina came back strongly and scored twice, both through penalty corners, first of a rebound in the 17th minute and the second in the 19th minute. Scorer on both occasions was JL Tulini. And in the 27th minute after a failed penalty corner, Ferreiro made it 3-1 for Argentina. In the 40th minute when a fine touch by Cassella got Argentina its fourth goal, Canada went for Video Referral but without success. For a last-minute consolation. Canada got a penalty corner in the 60th minute and Gordon Johnston, playing with face mask again, found the target to make the score little respectable 2-5. Earlier, the USA beat China 2-1 to take the bronze. It was rare to see seven players of Indian origin - Sukhpal Panesar, Balraj Panesar, Keegan Pereira, and Brandon Pereira - for Canada and Ajai Dhadwal, Mohan Gandhi, Parmeet Singh for the USA receiving medals. While Canadians got silver medals, the Americans got bronze medals. In earlier classification games Mexico beat Peru 6-0 while Trinidad and Tobago beat Cuba 2-1. -PTC News-
