Panjab University (PU) is all set to hike both tuition and examination fee by 10 per cent for the session 2018-19. A committee constituted to deliberate on it took the decision today. Sources said that for self-financing courses, a hike of 10 per cent per annum has been proposed for the new students while the current students have to pay a fee enhanced by five per cent. While in the University Institute of Applied Management Sciences, the hike has been fixed at Rs 7,500 for the new students as the 10 per cent hike was much more. Courses include BE courses in the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), four-year BDS course, BA/BCom LLB (five-year integrated course) are among the self financing courses. Traditional courses include Honours school courses, MA, MCom, MEd and MPhil, while professionals include those in engineering, law and MBA. The proposal of fee hike has to be first approved by the Syndicate and then the Senate for final approval. “The students council will oppose the fee hike. Even today, we have protested at the meeting. If implemented, we will lead the protest,” said Jashan Kamboj, president, Panjab University Campus Students Council. “The university authorities are just shifting the responsibility from the government on to the students. It is a part of the privatisation policy of the government which needs to be challenged. We will mobilise the students once again on it,” said Harman Deep, SFS leader. -PTC News-
