Toll booths to be removed, GPS-based toll collection within 1 year: Nitin Gadkari

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Thursday assured the House that the physical toll booths would be removed while the toll money would be collected on the basis of GPS imaging. "I want to assure the House within one year all physical toll booths in the country will be removed. Toll money will be collected based on GPS imaging," said Nitin Gadkari in Lok Sabha during the Question Hour. Adding, he said that police inquiry has been instructed for those vehicles which do not pay toll using FASTags. "There are cases of toll theft and GST evasion cases if FASTags are not fitted in vehicles," he said. Also Read | Has PM Narendra Modi directed all states to cancel exams? FASTags, which facilitate electronic payment of fees at toll plazas, was introduced in 2016. From February 16 onwards, the vehicles without FASTag are required to pay double toll fees at the electronic toll plazas across the nation. Nitin Gadkari assured that the physical toll booths would be removed while the toll money would be collected on the basis of GPS imaging. The compulsion of tags would help in ensuring that vehicles pass seamlessly through the toll plazas while the payment would be done electronically. Nitin Gadkari also said that the new vehicles have FasTags fitted on them. The government has stated that it would give free FASTags for old vehicles.
