BJP betrayed Guru Sahab by not releasing Sikh prisoners: Harsimrat Badal

Chandigarh, February 6: Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Monday said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had betrayed Guru Sahab by going back on the commitment given to the Sikh community to free all Bandi Singhs on the 550th birth anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji in 2019.

Harsimrat Badal was speaking to media after interacting with Istri Akali Dal members. The Bathinda MP said it did not behove the union government to go back on the commitment given to the Sikh community. “All Bandi Singhs should be freed immediately taking into account the fact that they have served up to 30 years in prison, double than a normal life sentence”.

Badal also asserted it was shameful that the Delhi AAP government was not releasing Prof Devenderpal Singh Bhullar, despite the completion of all formalities for his release.

“The release orders of Prof Bhullar are lying on Delhi chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal‘s desk for one year now yet he is not being released”. Badal said there was a pending formality of the Delhi Sentence Review Committee which was being postponed continuously. “Kejriwal should explain why he is going against the sentiments of the community and taking an anti-Sikh stance on this issue”.

Badal said she had held a very fruitful interaction with Istri Akali Dal members. She said she was amazed by the enthusiasm of the workers of the women's wing who had been working relentlessly for the party for decades without any reward. Badal said women had been at the forefront of bringing AAP to power. “It is these women who were feeling most betrayed. None of the promises made to them has been fulfilled. Istri Akali Dal workers said they were most affected by the wrong policies of both the Congress and AAP governments.

She said the workers had resolved to confront leaders of both parties and ask them about the promises made to women of the State. “These include doing away with the drug menace as well as giving Rs.1000 per month to all women in the State”. Badal said women were also perturbed that the AAP government had closed down many social welfare schemes and that beneficiaries were not getting their dues in the last nine months in many cases, including the Ashirwad scheme.
