Sarabha (Ludhiana), November 16: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday urged the Central Government to confer Bharat Ratna on Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha and other martyrs, who had sacrificed their lives during the national freedom struggle.

 Addressing a gathering during a state-level function to mark the martyrdom day of Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha at his native village Sarabha in Ludhiana, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said bestowing Bharat Ratna award on Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha, Shaheed Rajguru, Shaheed Sukhdev, Lala Lajpat Rai and others would enhance the prestige of this award. 



He said these great martyrs deserved this award as they had made supreme sacrifices for emancipating the country from foreign clutches. He urged the Centre to consider his demand. 

Bhagwant Mann also demanded national martyr status for Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha adding that the state government would flag this issue with the Centre.

The Punjab Chief Minister claimed that due to strenuous efforts of the state government, the Mohali airport had been named after Shaheed Bhagat Singh. A notification to this regard had already been issued by the Centre, he added.

Bhagwant Mann further said naming the airports, universities and other institutions in the name of these iconic martyrs was imperative to perpetuate their glorious legacy.   

The Punjab Chief Minister said the state government would soon complete the construction work of the civil air terminal at Halwara airport.  The work would be accomplished at a cost of Rs 50 crore over an area of 161 acre. Bhagwant Mann said this project would further put Punjab on the map of air connectivity and save time, money and energy of the commuters.

Earlier, the Chief Minister visited the ancestral house of Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha and paid floral tributes to the martyr.
