Who is Nana Patole?

Nana Patole, aged 56, a four-term lawmaker representing Bhandara, is poised to be appointed as the new leader of the Maharashtra Congress. Known for his assertive leadership style in the Vidarbha region, a former party stronghold now facing tough competition from the BJP, Patole recently stepped down as the Speaker of the Maharashtra assembly, anticipating his imminent selection as the Congress chief.

Having rejoined the Congress in 2017, Patole came back after a three-year stint with the BJP. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he won against NCP's Praful Patel from the Bhandara-Gondia constituency while being on a BJP ticket. Patole gained attention in 2017 when he publicly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi before leaving the BJP. Upon his return to the Congress, he was swiftly appointed as the head of the party's farmers' wing. His fourth consecutive assembly victory in 2019 led to his Speaker position.
