'It will lead to chaos': Supreme Court refuses to stay ongoing Punjab panchayat elections

PTC News Desk: The Supreme Court refused to stay the ongoing panchayat elections in Punjab on Tuesday, stating there would be "chaos" if courts began to stay polls on polling days.

The state's panchayat elections began at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, and petitions seeking a stay were heard before a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud.

"If polling began today, how can we intervene at this point? Probably the high court realised the gravity of the situation and vacated the poll stay," observed the bench.

"There will be chaos if we stay the polling, especially on polling day," Chief Justice DY Chandrachud stated.

The Supreme Court, however, agreed to look into the petitions challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court's decision allowing panchayat elections in Punjab.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court recently dismissed almost 1,000 petitions seeking the cancellation of panchayat elections.
