Discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics with a sensational national record effort of 65.06m surpassing her earlier personal best by four metres on the final day of the Federation Cup Senior National Athletics Championships on Friday.
The 25-year-old Discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur from Badal village in Punjab, who had also bagged gold in the 2019 edition of the championships, heaved the discus to 65.06m in her first throw at the NIS.

Later, she fouled all her remaining five attempts.
The Sports Authority of India tweeted: "Many congratulations to Kamalpreet Kaur who achieved qualification for Tokyo 2020 in women's discus throw with a national record attempt of 65.06m. This is also above the Olympic qualification benchmark of 63.5m."

The qualifying mark for Tokyo Olympics in women's discus throw was 63.50m while she attempted 65.06m. Her earlier personal best was 61.04m which she had recorded in 2018.
She broke the nine-year-old national record of 64.76m which was in the name of Krishna Poonia, Olympian and 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist.
Meanwhile, the Athletics Federation of India wrote: "Road to Tokyo 2020. Kamalpreet Kaur breaks Women's Discus Throw National Record with an effort of 65.06m (Olympic Qualification standard 63.50m); Previous NR: Krishna Poonia 64.76m (2012)"
