Punjab Congress crisis: Former Punjab Congress president and senior leader Sunil Jakhar is the frontrunner for the post of Chief Minister, sources said, as the party wants to project a non-Sikh face ahead of the Assembly elections 2022 to counter the AAP, which is gaining ground in the state.

As per reports reaching here, the Congress Legislative Party meeting, scheduled to be held in Chandigarh at 5 pm on September 18, will pass a resolution in this regard. However, Captain Amarinder Singh will not be attending the meeting.
Sources said Captain Amarinder Singh was angry at 'humiliation' by the party leadership. It has come to light that a joint letter signed by 50 MLAs had been received by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to replace the Chief Minister of Punjab.
Meanwhile, the AICC has deputed party general secretary Ajay Maken and Harish Chaudhary as central observers to the Congress legislative Party meeting at 5 pm on Saturday (September 18). Punjab Cabinet ministers close to PCC chief Navjot Sidhu, including Sukhjinder Randhawa and Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, have been openly raising a banner of revolt against Captain Amarinder Singh.

Both AICC observers — Harish Chaudhary, a minister in the Rajasthan government, and Ajay Maken — are considered close to former party chief Rahul Gandhi.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi had also spoken to Captain Amarinder Singh after MLAs wrote to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) to seek a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP). Though there is no official information, it is learnt that the option of Captain Amarinder Singh stepping down from his post might have been discussed.
