Punjab Cabinet ministers Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa wrote to Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Friday demanding the creation of Batala as the 24th district to honour people's wishes and overall development of the area. In a letter to Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh, Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said that Batala is a historic town but did not grab the focus that it deserves. It is the oldest city of the state after Bathinda which was founded in 1465. They further said that "Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru, was married to Mata Sulakhni in this city on July 8, 1487. They added that "Gurdwara Dera Sahib and Gurdwara Kandh Sahib were adorned in his memory."
