Rain adds to the misery of farmers, 2 lakh MT of wheat destroyed

Rain adds to the misery of farmers, 2 lakh MT of wheat destroyed While the state rejoiced in showers of rain after a dust storm, the wheat lying in the open at grain markets got drenched in the rainfall that lashed the district on Wednesday. The rain added to the miseries of the farmers who were yet to harvest their crop and also those who had brought their crop to the grain markets on Wednesday morning. 2 lakh MT of wheat in gunny bags were yet to be lifted from grain markets, said State marketing board official. “The expected arrival of wheat in Moga district is 9.23 lakh MT,” claimed Jaswinder Singh Brar, an agro-scientist. District Magistrate Dilraj Singh Sandhawalia claimed that 7,19,054 MT of wheat had been procured by agencies out of the total of 7,19,187 MT arrived in the grain markets till Tuesday evening. The procurement process is likely to resume only after the sun shines bright to dry the wet grains. The agencies are not accepting grains with higher moisture content. The quality of grains is likely to be affected only in wheat bags submerged in low-lying areas of the grain markets, as per the agriculture officials. -PTC News
