Rajya Sabha passes Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019

Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 with 125 votes in favour and  105 votes against the bill. Union Home Minister Amit Shah tabled the bill in Rajya Sabha during the winter session of the Parliament. While presenting the bill in the upper house of the Parliament, Amit Shah said that "There has been an almost 20% decline each in population of religious minorities in both Pakistan and present day Bangladesh. Either they were killed or they fled to India for shelter." Meanwhile, he said, "Misinformation has been spread that this bill is against Muslims of India. I want to ask the people saying this that how is this bill related to Indian Muslims? They are Indian citizens and will always remain,no discrimination against them." "No Muslim in India needs to worry due to this Bill. Don't get scared if someone tries to scare you. Earlier, Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 was passed in Lok Sabha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that "Delighted that the Lok Sabha has passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 after a rich and extensive debate. I thank the various MPs and parties that supported the Bill. This Bill is in line with India’s centuries old ethos of assimilation and belief in humanitarian values."
He also added that "I would like to specially applaud Home Minister Amit Shah Ji for lucidly explaining all aspects of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019. He also gave elaborate answers to the various points raised by respective MPs during the discussion in the Lok Sabha."
