India may have improved upon its best previous best medal haul in any of the Asian Games from 65 to 69 but it slipped two spots to eighth position in overall standing in the Asian Games.

China finished at the top with its tally touching almost 300 mark. It had 132 gold medals in its tally of 289. Japan became the only second nation to aggregate past 200 mark. Japan won 75 gold medals, including a double in hockey, to finish with 205 medals.

Besides China and Japan, other countries that finished above India were Korea (177 medals), Indonesia (98 medals), Uzbekistan (70 medals), Iran (62 medals) and Taipei (67 medals). Iran (20) and Taipei (17) finished above India because they had more gold medals than India.

Only 37 of the 49 participating nations could win a medal in the 2018 Games. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh for example would return home without a medal and Pakistan got only four bronze medals and Afghanistan had two bronze medals.

In the last Asian Games India had 57 medals, including 11 gold and 10 silver. Though this time India won 15 gold to equal the previous best of 15 golds in the inaugural Asian Games in 1951, it could not move up in overall standing. In 1951 India, as a host, was second. In 2010 when India had its richest haul of 65 medals, including 14 golds, it was placed sixth.

India brought a squad of 574 athletes to Jakarta and ended with 69 medals, including 15 golds and 24 Silver medals - the best ever in 67 years history of the games.

This time India won medals in 17 different sports with athletics contributing the major share, 19 medals, including seven gold medals. It was revival of Indian athletics as India reasserted its supremacy not only in some jumping and throw events but also in track events, including 800 m for men besides holding fort in relays.

Record number of medals notwithstanding, India had mixed games. There were some excellent performances and some big disappointments also.

If boxer Amit Kumar defeated the current Olympic champion to win gold in 49 kg boxing, Joshua Chinappa shocked current world champion Ann Nicol in squash, and teenaged prodigy shooter Saurabh besides javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, shot putter Tejinderpal Singh Sidhu and triple jumper Apinder Singh to win laurels for India, shocking were relegation of Indian Kabaddi and hockey teams, first round defeat of wrestler Sushil Kumar and failure of World champion shooter young Manu Bhaker.

If Saurabh Chaudhary was one of the youngest to win a gold medal here, Pranab Bardhan in bridge was the oldest to win a gold medal in the Games. Parnab and Shibnath Sarkar won the gold in Bridge men pairs event. Parnab turned 60 in February this year.

Neeraj Chopra becomes the second Indian athlete after Milkha Singh to win gold medals both in Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. Likewsie PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal have become only badminton players to win a medal in all major sporting events, including Olympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.

India also won its first ever individual medal in women singles in Badminton with PV Sindhu getting a silver and Saina Nehwal winning a bronze.

Vinesh also did India proud by winning a gold in wrestling. She is also the first woman wrestler to win a gold in Asian Games.

Both in Kabaddi and hockey, Indian women teams won a silver medal each while men in both the games ended with a bronze medal each.

The bronze, 69th medal for India, was a big consolation.

Hockey went the same way as Kabaddi did. Though pre-event speculations favoured India to win "double gold" both in hockey and Kabaddi, it landed with a combo of Silver and bronze in both. And in both sports, women scored over men by taking Silver medals while men had to contend with bronze only.

Playing before a packed stadium, India enjoyed both territorial and ball control advantage over its rivals but the game was not without some anxious moments that had Indian suporters on the edge of their seats, more so after Pakistan reduced the margin mid way in the second half.

India took early lead with a neat deflection into net by forward Akashdeep Singh after a move from the left flank.. This goal, that came in the third minute, had Pakistan under pressure in the first half. India could have consolidated the lead in the 14th minute but Mandeep could not hold on to the advantage and frittered away the chance.

After 1-0 lead in the first quarter, Pakistan did try to stage a come back by forcing two penalty corners in the second quarter but without any success.

Conceding a penalty corner early in the second half, India not only defended its fort well but went all out to consolidate the lead. As a result, it forced its first penalty corner of the game in the 50th minute and Harmanpreet Singh made no mistake with the award.

India's joy, however, was short lived as Pakistan hit back, through a goal by Atiq Mohammad.

Though Pakistan substituted goalkeeper with an extra offender in the last three minutes, the move failed to pay any dividends.

With this 2-1 win, India once again reiterated its supremacy over Pakistan thus reducing the agony and pain of failing to make the gold medal round.

Asian Games: India wraps its Asian Games campaign with men's hockey bronze

https://www.ptcnews.tv/18th-asian-games-japan-is-new-asian-games-mens-hockey-champion

18th Asian Games: Japan is new Asian Games men's hockey champion

https://www.ptcnews.tv/18th-asian-games-japan-is-new-asian-games-mens-hockey-champion

Sat, 01 Sep 2018 21:27:40 +0530

Japan has done to hockey what exactly Iran did to kabaddi in the 18th Asian Games.

Both Japan and Iran have emerged as new power houses in kabaddi and hockey ending in the process partial to complete supremacy of India in both the sports.

While Japan won a hockey double on the lines Iran did in kabaddi, a new Asian hockey order has been set in place. Playing against Malaysia, Japan not only overcame 1-4 deficit to end the regulation period at 6-6 all but also went on to win the penalty shoot out to win its first ever Asian Games hockey gold in men's section on the penultimate day of the Games.

Though Japan has already qualified as a host of the 2020 Olympic Games, yet it asserted its supremacy by lifting the Asian crown both in men's and women's sections. While Malaysia took the silver, bronze went to 2014 champions India. Pakistan finished fourth in men's section.

Setting the pace with an impressive 3-1 lead in the first quarter, Malaysia looked in full command in the first quarter without realizing that their opponents have different plans in store for them. Japan convincingly defeated Malaysia in a larger game plan by storming back into the game time and again. A penalty corner goal seconds before the final whistle had put the score at 6-6. In fact, two goals came in the last 90 seconds after the score read 5-5.

What a pulsating final of an event that witnessed majority of high scoring one-sided pool games and upsets in the knock out round with India and Pakistan failing to make the gold medal round in men's hockey.

Malaysia went into attack right from the beginning and took lead in the fourth minute following its first penalty corner.

Muhammed Razie Rahim, who also scored against India in semi-finals, made no mistake with the first corner award.

Japan hit back with a fantastic goal, perhaps the goal of the tournament as Saren Tanaka cut back from the goal line, drove in and pelted home an angular shot to put the teams at par.

Five minutes later, a brilliant brace of goal by forward Tajuddin Ahmed with powerful reverse flicks from middle of the circle had taken the lead to 3-1 for Malaysia. To add salt to the injury Faizal Saari made it 4-0 by the time game was only 17 minutes old.

While it looked all out for Japan, it came back strongly with Kanta Tanaka making it 2-4 with a brilliant goal.

Tajuddin Ahmed completed a hat trick as he scored sixth goal for his team while Koji Yamasaki and Kenta Tanaka (two) were the other goal scorers.

18th Asian Games: Japan is new Asian Games men's hockey champion

https://www.ptcnews.tv/indian-mens-hockey-team-beat-pakistan-bronze-medal

Indian Men's Hockey team beat Pakistan by 2-1 to win the bronze medal

https://www.ptcnews.tv/indian-mens-hockey-team-beat-pakistan-bronze-medal

Sat, 01 Sep 2018 17:35:30 +0530

Indian Men's Hockey team beat Pakistan by 2-1 to win the bronze medal at the Asian Games 2018 here on Saturday. Akashdeep Singh and Harmanpreet Singh scored India's two goals.

This is India's third bronze medal at Asian Games. For Pakistan this is only the fourth time they have had to settle for a silver medal.

The hooter goes and India make sure they don't return home without a medal as they finish with bronze. Pakistan fought hard but couldn't overcome the stubborn Indian defence.

. India started their Asiad campaign strongly by registering big wins over their opponents. En route to the semifinal, India had beaten Indonesia 17-0, Hong Kong 26-0, Japan 8-0, Korea 5-3 and Sri Lanka 20-0. However, the Indian men's hockey team, who were the favourites to win an Asian Games gold, could not cross the Malaysian hurdle, losing the semifinal 6-7 in a shoot-out. Pakistan, on the other hand, topped Pool B with a total of 15 points.

In the group stage, Pakistan beat Thailand 10-0, Oman 10-0, Kazakhstan 16-0, Malaysia 4-1 and Bangladesh 5-0. However, in the semifinals, Pakistan lost 0-1 to Japan. In the 2014 Asian Games, India had beaten Pakistan 4-2 in a shoot-out to win an Asiad Gold in hockey after 16 years. Prior to that, India defeated Pakistan in 1966 Asian Games to win the coveted gold medal. India had beaten South Korea to win gold in Asian Games 1998.

India, however, has fewer gold medals now(14) than in 2010 (15). But India may get gold in squash women's team final.

Amit Kumar had Dusmatov Hasaboy of Uzbekistan as his opponent in the gold medal round. Playing confidently, Amit planned his bout scientifically to contain more aggressive opponent and managed to win the gold on points.

In the women's hockey final, India went down to Japan 1-2 thus losing the chance of a direct qualifier to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Earlier China beat Korea 2-1 to take the bronze.

In new women's hockey order written in Jakarta on Friday, Japan is the new women's champion followed by India and China with Korea taking the fourth spot.

In Kabaddi also, while Indian women got a silver, men won an automatic bronze as a semi finalist team. In hockey, however, the losing semi-finalists have to play for the bronze medal and India plays Pakistan tomorrow before the gold medal game between Malaysia and Japan.

The women's final between India and Japan looked a foregone conclusion as the Indians started on a defensive note while trying desperately to put their game together. On the other hand, Japanese, with nothing to lose outlook, put everything into their game.

Apparent weaknesses in defending penalty corners and failure to convert scoring chances, including penalty corners turned out to be the bane of Indian hockey.

The Japanese strategy worked. Both times they took lead, they tried to defend it. Though after Oikaya Shihari given them the lead from a deflection of a penalty corner shot by Mayumi Ono in the 11th minute, India had to struggle hard to restore the parity.

The equalizer came in the 25th minute when Neha Goyal scored a brilliant opportunist goal.

Before the end of third quarter, Japanese were up in the lead again, this time through a penalty corner conversion by Motomi Kawamuria in the 43rd minute.

Indians did try hard but in the absence of coherent hockey, all moves fizzled out and a couple of good scoring chances, too, were frittered away.

Breaking News:18th Asian Games: After Kabaddi, hockey also fails to deliver

https://www.ptcnews.tv/breaking-news-18th-asian-games-india-equals-2010-medals-tally

Breaking News: 18th Asian Games: India equals 2010 medals tally

https://www.ptcnews.tv/breaking-news-18th-asian-games-india-equals-2010-medals-tally

Fri, 31 Aug 2018 23:19:06 +0530

With a silver in women's hockey and a bronze in boxing, India has equaled its previous best medal tally of 65 achieved in 2010 Asian Games.

Joshua Chinappa gave India a lot to cheer about by upsetting the applecart of five times world champion and current Asian Games champion David Ann Nicol of Malaysia to assure India a place in the gold medal match of women's team in Squash event of 18th Asian Games on Friday.

Her win helped India win the semifinal 2-0 and play Hong Kong for the gold medal match tomorrow.

David Ann Nicol is considered a legend in women's squash as she has been world champion five times and has won five of six finals in women's singles in Asian Games. She is also the current Commonwealth Games champion and had beaten Joshua Chinappa in women's singles in Asian Games.

It was a sweet revenge for 32-year-old Joshua as she won a gruelling 12-10, 11-9,6-11, 101-2 and 11-9 encounter in the first match of the team event on Friday.

India has already won four bronze medals in Squash, including a bronze today in men's team event after losing to Hong Kong in semifinals.

Though India's best performance was in 2010 Asian Games where it won a total of 65 medals - 14 gold 17 silver 34 bronze medals - it is already set to cross that aggregate here as it expects a couple of medals in sailing, two in boxing, one more in Squash besides a gold or silver in women's hockey.

It is for the first time that the Asian Games men's hockey final will be played without either India or Pakistan.

While Malaysia stroked out India in sudden death in penalty shoot out 6-7 after a 2-2 draw in the regulation period, Japan beat Pakistan by a solitary goal by Shota Yamada.

Interestingly while the pool games saw a flood of goals, teams running for medals encountered acute shortage of goals in the knock out round.

Now India and Pakistan will play on Saturday for the bronze medal as both have failed to gain direct entry to the 2020 Olympic Games.

The win for Japan was all the more credible as it had beaten Korea in the last pool game to make a surprise entry to semi finals. It will be Japan's first final in Asian Games.

The law of averages caught India at its penultimate hurdle as it went down fighting Malaysia in sudden death of penalty shoot out in the first semifinals of men's section in the hockey competition of the 18th Asian Games on Thursday.

With 6-7 defeat in the tie-breaker after playing a 2-2 draw in the regulation period, India lost a chance of gaining direct entry into the 2020 Olympic Games and will have now go through the Olympic qualifiers.

The defeat must have disappointed hockey fans a great deal as India had been pumping goals against all its opponents in earlier pool matches, notching up an impressive tally of 78 goals in five games. The law of averages took over at a moment when India wanted its consistency to continue.

Some aggressive play by Malaysia and lack or urgency in some areas of the Indian team turned out to be decisive factors in a game that had patches of good hockey. In fact, Malaysia were a better side as it was not only deprived of a goal by the Video Referee but also saw another golden chance frittering away when a powerful flick from a penalty corner hit the cross piece and bounced back into play.

India did have its chances and at times it also dominated proceedings but efforts were not enough to upset the Malaysians who had nothing to lose. In fact, not many gave Malaysia a chance against India after it suffered a 1-4 defeat at the hands of Pakistan in a pool game. Vut Malaysia has always been a tough hurdle for India.

After a penalty corner goal by Malaysia was disallowed by Video Referee, India took the lead in the third minute of the second half when Harmanpreet Singh scored from a penalty corner.

Midway in the third quarter, two goals were scored within a span of a minute. First Malaysia equalised Mohammed Razie Rahim in an indirect conversion of a penalty corner and less than a minute later Varun scored India's second goal, also from a penalty corner.

When it looked all good, India paid a heavy price of its lethargy in defence. A poor clearance two minutes from the final whistle gave Malaysia a decisive penalty corner and Mohammed Razie scored to bring the teams at par.

To break the deadlock, penalty shoot out rule was applied. But in the first set of five, both teams scored once. In the sudden death, both scored four goals each while the Malaysians converted the fifth, SV Sunil fumbled to see India out of run for the gold medal match.

India will now bronze medal match on Saturday.

Indian relay teams, both men and women, wrapped up the day on a cheerful note adding a gold and a silver to the country's kitty in 18th Asian Games on Thursday.

On Thursday, India was placed at the eighth position in medals tally with 13 gold 21 silver and 25 bronze medals, two medals more than what it had in the last edition of the games.

Keeping to traditions of doing well in relays, the Indian teams were the toast of knowledable crowd at the historic stadium that was also the venue of the 1958 Asian Games.

While women's team pipped Bahrain to second spot to win the gold in 4X400 m relay, the men's team lost it to Qatar in the same event.

Hima Das, P. Raju Mechittira, Saritaben L. Gayakwad and Vismala V Karath ran their laps brilliantly to finish the race in 3:28.72 minutes, well ahead of Bahrain.
