According to media reports she was from Kapurthala in Punjab, India. Kelowna RCMP said on the weekend that their initial investigation suggested a man working at the university assaulted a security guard. He was arrested under the Mental Health Act. They said they were working with the university to investigate the alleged assault and that there was no risk to the public. Kelowna City Councillor Mohini Singh told the media that she wanted to know why Kaur was working the night shift alone. She also wanted to know that if the alleged assailant had a mental health issue, why was he allowed to work at the university where there are so many young students. The councillor said Kaur’s parents are arriving from India later this week. Paramjit Singh Patara, Vice President of the Okanagan Sikh Temple, told the media that the Sikh community is trying to see how best they could support Kaur’s parents. Also read |Delhi caps Covid test rates for private labs; Check new charges here Specifically, the information outlined that officers with the US Customs and Border Protection had apprehended a group of individuals who had crossed into the US from Canada, near the town of Emerson, Manitoba. Further, it indicated that one of the adults had items meant for an infant but that no infant was with the group. Upon receiving this information at 9:23 am, a search was immediately launched on both sides of the border. RCMP officers were already patrolling the area and the search began at 9:24am. Extensive patrols were conducted and, at approximately 1:30pm, the bodies of three individuals were located on the Canadian side of the border, approximately 10km east of Emerson. Fearing there may be additional victims; officers continued their search and located the body of an additional male, believed at this time to be in his mid-teens. All victims were located approximately 12 metres from the US/Canada border. At this very early stage of the investigation, it appears that they all died due to exposure to the cold weather. Work is underway to identify the victims and an autopsy has been scheduled to confirm the cause of death.
