The flights will be operated for seven hours from October 26 to November 6 to facilitate the movement of passengers during the festival season. 

The runway will be available for civilian flight operations from 5 am to 12 noon daily during that period. During the second phase of maintenance work, an 18-hour window — from 5 am to 11 pm— has been planned from November 7 to 18.

Meanwhile, the Chandigarh International Airport Authority (CHIAL) officials, UT and Mohali administrations, and other stakeholders held a review meeting today to discuss the action taken report (ATR) regarding the unusual bird activity in the vicinity of the airport threatening flight safety.

The deceased woman has been identified as Sushila Negi, a widow who was staying with the accused Ravi Negi, who is an employee of Punjab University, Chandigarh. Her elder son is reportedly settled abroad. 

According to the police, both the mother and the son had an argument in the morning, which soon escalated into an altercation. In a fit of rage, Ravi allegedly attacked his mother with a sharp-edged weapon, slitting her throat, killing her on the spot.

The neighbours reportedly reached spot after hearing distressing noises from inside, and found the woman lying in a pool of blood, while her son had already fled the spot. 

The residents immediately informed the police, who arrived and took the body into custody.

Police said the accused was mentally disturbed and had escaped before they arrived. Forensic teams collected evidence from the spot.

An FIR under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered at the Sector 39 police station, Chandigarh. 

The police confirmed that Ravi has been absconding since the murder. Multiple teams have been formed to trace and apprehend the accused. The police are also probing possible motives behind the murder, including reported domestic disputes and financial issues.

She is currently undergoing treatment at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Sector 32.

According to an eyewitness, a speeding black Mahindra Thar hit them in the afternoon in Sector 46. The SUV driver fled the spot after the accident. The police has so far managed to seize the vehicle, however the accused remain at large. 

Meanwhile, a massive row erupted at GMCH Hospital in Sector 32 a day after the accident with the family of the teenage girls alleging harassment by doctors. 

The girl’s father alleged that instead of treating his daughter, the doctors were threatening to throw them out. “They even called the guards and tried to force us outside,” he claimed. Questioning the police’s handling of the case, he said that the driver of the Thar has still not been arrested, even though CCTV cameras are installed across the city.

The family has warned of larger demonstration if appropriate action is not taken soon. 

According to the information, over 10 challans were issued in the name of Thar driver, yet no arrest have been made so far.  However, the police officials said that the driver's house was traced to Sector 21. However, they found out that the driver no longer lived there. 

The elder one, identified as Sajaf (19), was killed and her younger sister, Isha (17), critically injured. She was admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Sector 32.

The two sisters, residents of Burail, were crossing the road to reach their vocational institute in Sector 46 when the incident occurred. Local residents rushed them to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Sector 32, where doctors declared Sajaf dead on arrival, while her younger sister, Isha, was reported to be in critical condition.

Police said a case has been filed at the Sector 34 Police Station, and efforts are ongoing to track down the driver of the Thar. Investigators are also examining CCTV footage from the surrounding areas to identify the vehicle.

According to the sources, the police officials have seized the vehicle. 

The revised timings will be applicable to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16, as well as its affiliated dispensaries, Civil Hospital Sector 22, Civil Hospital Manimajra, and Civil Hospital Sector 45.

Currently, the OPD timings at these hospitals and dispensaries are from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The administration clarified that there will be no change in the existing timings of the ESI Dispensaries in Sectors 29 and 23, as well as the U.T. Secretariat and High Court Dispensaries.

With winter approaching, the city is likely to experience increased fog during morning and evening hours. To ensure that patients coming from distant areas do not face difficulties due to cold and fog, the administration has decided to adjust the OPD timings in government hospitals.

In view of the pandemonium, Mayor Hapreet Kaur Babla directed the marshals to to remove Senior Deputy Mayor Jasbir Singh Bunty, Deputy Mayor Taruna Mehta and AAP councillor Prem Lata from the House.

The meeting was then adjourned for ten minutes. 

In the absence of the Mayor and other officials, Senior Deputy Mayor Bunty and Opposition councillors convened a meeting in the Well of the House. Bunty took charge as acting Mayor while the Opposition criticised both the ruling BJP and the Mayor.

Earlier, BJP councillors had lauded Mayor Babla for receiving a women’s empowerment award in Moscow. However, as the BJP members praised her, the Opposition broke into sloganeering, accusing the Mayor of harassing and exploiting Municipal Corporation employees.

During the General House Meeting of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, Councillor Saurabh Joshi raised questions about the operations and financial accountability of the Horticulture Waste Management Plant and around 110 horticulture waste pits across the city’s green belts.

Joshi demanded that the Commissioner launch an independent probe into the issue and present a detailed report before the next General House Meeting. He also referred to a written submission he had sent to the Commissioner earlier in the day, flagging concerns over the investment, functioning, transparency, and accountability of these projects.

He warned that if his call for an inquiry and strict action on his representation was ignored, he would have no choice but to stage a protest (Dharna) at the Municipal Corporation office.

On Tuesday morning, a team of officials accompanied by heavy police force reached the site and demolished the houses in the colony with bulldozers. By around 8:30 a.m., most of the houses had been reduced to piles of sand, bricks, and rubble.

Around 450 houses were demolished in the drive. However, four houses that had court-issued stay orders were spared.

The action has sparked outrage among the residents, most of whom are migrants. The residents have described the demolition as unfair ahead of the festive season and said that they have nowhere to go now. 

According to the administration, a two-week notice was served prior to the demolition and residents were warned to vacate the colony by September 30.

200 police personnel deployed for security

During the demolition, the district administration directed the SSP to deploy four DSPs, women constables, and 200 police personnel for security. The Health Department was instructed to station four ambulances at the site. The administration stated that after clearing the colony, the land would be developed.

The court has also ordered the UT administration to pay a compensation of Rs 1 crore to the family of a girl who died in the tragedy and Rs 50,000 to a child who lost a limb. The court highlighted that this compensation is in addition to the amounts already dispursed to the victims' families. 

A bench comprising Justice Kuldeep Tiwari has directed Chandigarh education department to ensure that every school either permits students to have their meals in classrooms or facilitate a proper safe and hygiene dining space.

In July 2022, a 250-year-old peepal tree fell on a group of students while they were having lunch at Carmel Convent School. A class 10 girl was killed and 14 were injured.

The death of the child was an irreplaceable loss to the family, HC said in its recent order. "She could have brought laurels and acclaim to her parents, but this tragic incident shattered their aspirations and dreams.

Regarding the girl who lost a limb, Justice Tiwari observed that at the age of 15, she suffered the amputation of her left arm and had to undergo multiple medical interventions and surgeries. She endured significant trauma and disability, adversely affecting her ability to perform daily activities. 

"Although she has joined school, she faces limitations in participating fully in activities such as sports, dancing, writing, and drawing. She requires constant assistance in her routine tasks," the order says, noting that the in incident also "limited her future career opportunities and may impact her prospects for marriage".

An FIR has been registered under section 25/54/59 of Arms Act. 

The accused have been identified as Arvinder Singh alias Nannu, resident of Manimajra Pipliwala Town, Mantu, resident of Bhakarpur Village in Mohali and Pawan, a resident of Indira Colony.

The police investigation also suggests that the accused have visited jail multiple times to meet gangster Kali. 

The arrests were made following credible inputs about presence of accused Pawan in the area who was also carrying cartridges. He was later arrested by the crime branch near Tech Mahindra road in IT Park. Several weapons were recovered from him. 

“Chandigarh’s upward movement by 19 positions is a testament to its sustainable urban development initiatives, proactive air quality management strategies, and active citizen participation,” said Saurabh Kumar, Director Environment-cum-Member Secretary, Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC).

The authorities have attributed the rise to extensive collective efforts of the Municipal Corporation, Traffic Police, Transport Departments and the CPCC.

Earlier the schools were closed till September 3, which has now been extended till September 7.  The directive applies to all government, aided, recognised, and private schools throughout the city.

The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to keep in mind the safety of children and staff amid heavy rains and flood crisis. 

The authorities have further urged all the residents to comply with the directives of the local administration.  

As the water level of the lake crossed the danger mark of 1,163 feet, the excess water from the Sukhna Lake is being released into the Ghaggar river through the Sukhna Choe.

The auction, held from August 19 to 22, included numbers from the new series (0001 to 9999) as well as leftover fancy numbers from previous series.

With a total of 577 numbers auctioned, the RLA generated its highest-ever revenue of Rs 4.08 crore. The second-highest bid went to “0003” at Rs 17.84 lakh, followed by “0009” at Rs 16.82 lakh. Other popular numbers included “0005” (Rs 16.51 lakh), “0007” (Rs 16.50 lakh), “0002” (Rs 13.80 lakh), and “9999” (Rs 10.25 lakh).

According to Pradhuman Singh, Director of the Transport Department, all seven numbers achieved record bids in their respective categories, leading to the highest profit in any RLA auction to date. Previously, the record for “0001” stood at Rs 31 lakh for the CH01-CZ series in May, when the RLA earned Rs 2.94 crore.

The third-highest bid was Rs 26.7 lakh for “0001” in the CH01-AP series, followed by Rs 25 lakh for the same number in the CH01-CY series.

Senior police officers reached the spot, soon after receiving the information. 

During the attack, Constable Pradeep was hit on the head with a brick, getting critically injured. Constable Ankit was also injured during the altercation with the group of men, who were under influence of alcohol. 

According to the information, the cops were on patrolling duty when they reached Sector-16 liquor shop, where group was already present. However, when the constables asked them to leave the area, they got into an argument. Within a short time, the argument turned into a fierce altercation with the drunk men attacked the constables.

As soon as the local people arrived at the spot, the accused fled the scene and the cops were immediately rushed to the hospital in a private vehicle. 

The police has launched investigation into the matter and are also scrutinising the CCTV footage to identify the accused and arrest them. Besides, the police officials are also interrogating the localities or nearby people who haad witnessed the scene. 

The floodgates will remain opened until the level recedes to at least 1,162 feet. 

The administration has deployed personnel for 24/7 basis cctv monitoring. A control room has also been established to coordinate communication with the district administrations of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula during the floodgate operations.

This is the fourth time in this season that the floodgate has been opened, with previous occurring on August 6, 8 and 15 in order to manage the excess water flowing into the Ghaggar River via the Sukhna Choe.

The gates have been opened four times in 2023, six times in 2022 and five times in 2021. 

The cops have also seized a vehicle bearing a Punjab number plate, reportedly used in the crime. The incident has raised alarming concerns over the security of such expensive medical supplies. 

The arrests were made after receiving tip-off and PGI security personnel laid a trap and apprehended the culprits. Their movements were captured in CCTV that helped in the identification of all the accused. 

According to the reports, theft was part of a major racket being operated with the stolen medicines being sold to a chemist near the hospital. 

Deepak, a resident of Faridkot, Punjab, was reportedly in close contact with notorious gangster Goldy Brar, who had earlier claimed responsibility for the attack. 

The incident dates back to November 26, 2024, when two explosions occurred outside two clubs in Chandigarh - the Seville Bar and Lounge, owned by singer and rapper Badshah, and De Orra Club, owned by local businessmen. The CCTV footage of the explosions showed a man hurling crude bomb at the clubs before fleeing the spot. The explosion was so massive that it shattered the windows of the establishments.

Fortunately no injuries were reported. Hours later notorious gangster Goldy Brar claimed responsibility of the attack in a purported facebook post. 

Two people were arrested on November 29, 2024 in the blast case following an encounter in Haryana's Hisar district. The encounter took place during a joint operation by the Chandigarh police and the Haryana Special Task Force (STF).

The directive also stated that no vehicle shall be stopped by Chandigarh police on the pretext of issuing challan. If any police personnel found violating the rules, strict action will be taken against them . 

The decision follows a meeting chaired by Chandigarh DGP at the Police Headquarters in Sector 9. Immediately after the meeting, a message was sent to the traffic wing that no traffic police personnel will stop vehicles in the city.

A total of 2,130 CCTV cameras have been installed in the city so far under the Chandigarh Smart City Project. Out of these, 1,433 cameras are directly connected to the police control room. Apart from this, out of 1,015 ITMS cameras installed at 40 major locations, 159 cameras identify those who jump red lights.

In order to streamline traffic system, Automatic Queue Detection System (QDS) has also been installed at traffic light points. This system will automatically decide the timing of the traffic lights based on the number of vehicles on the road. This technology has been installed at 163 places at 40 major traffic points.
