Hundreds of farmers, under the banner of Kisan Sangharsh Committee, held a protest and blocked traffic on Sri Hargobindpur Sahib – Beas highway in Batala on Monday.

The agriculturists were demanding immediate release of arrears towards sugarcane growers.

Raising slogans against Punjab government farmers claimed that Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had assured them that all dues pertaining to last season’s sugarcane crop would be cleared by September 30 but till now, not even a single rupee had been paid to any farmer of the state.

The farmers gathered in a large number in the morning and sat on a dharna on the road at 10 am.

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, along with Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, on Monday planted saplings at village Kothe Khushhalpur on Batala-Dera Baba Nanak Road, ahead of the ceremony to lay the foundation laying of Dera Baba Nanak-Kartarpur Corridor, as part of the state’s government’s programme to commemorate the legacy of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.

Apprising the Vice President about the unique initiative to bring awareness amongst people about the significance of clean, green and pollution free environment, the Chief Minister said that the state Government had launched an ambitious programme to plant 550 saplings in every village to commemorate the year-long celebrations of 550th Parkash Purb of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Punjab Governor VP Singh Badnore also planted a sapling to mark the occasion.

Notably, to disseminate the first Guru’s message on the significance of nature and human life far and wide, the Punjab Government has initiated plantation of indigenous varieties of trees at appropriate places in consultation with Gram Panchayats by November 2019. The estimated cost of this project is Rs. 10.50 crore, which shall be met through Greening Punjab Mission, with maintenance to be done through MGNREGS. The Forests Department has been entrusted with the gigantic task of plantation in every village across the state. The Chief Minister has already appealed to one and all to plant at least one fruit tree in their homes to make this ongoing plantation drive a grand success.

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today condemned the Congress party and its minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa for indulging in cheap politics by defacing the Kartarpur Corridor foundation stone even before start of the foundation stone laying ceremony.

In a statement here, former minister and senior SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia said Sukhjinder Randhawa’s action was shocking and shameful and totally unbecoming of a Sikh and a Punjab government minister. “No Sikh would try to politicise and spoil such a solemn occasion associated with Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji by performing such an abominable act”.

Mr Majithia said Sukhi Randhawa’s actions could be understood if one was to take into account his past. “Not only does he belong to the Congress party which attacked Sri Darbar Sahab with tanks and mortars and indulged in massacre of Sikhs in 1984, but he is also from a family which lauded Indira Gandhi for the attack on Sri Darbar Sahib”. Stating that Sukhi’s father Santokh Singh Randhawa had welcomed the attack on Sri Darbar Sahib, the Akali leader said the Congress minister had through his actions today not only politicised a solemn function but also shown his narrow mindedness. “At a time when the entire Sikh world was eagerly looking forward to the epoch making foundation stone laying ceremony, the Congress party and its leaders started playing a political credit game. This kind of behaviour is shameful and shows how much respect the Congress party has for the Sikh religion”.

Stating that Randhawa could not obliterate Badal Sahab’s efforts to make this corridor a reality by such disgusting acts, Mr Majithia said it was a fact that former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had proposed establishment of the corridor with Pakistan in 1999 after S Parkash Singh Badal had taken up the issue with him. “Badal Sahab also led the Punjab assembly in passing a resolution for establishment of the corridor in2010”, he added.

Asking the Congress party not to play politics on the Kartarpur corridor, Mr Majithia thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for fulfilling an age old demand of the Sikh community for opening of the corridor. “Sukhi Randhawa should not show his frustration by indulging in despicable acts and should uphold the ideology of ‘Sarbat Da Bhala ‘ as propagated by the great Guru “, Mr Majithia added.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has declined Pakistan’s Foreign Minister’s invitation to attend the foundation stone laying for the Kartarpur Corridor on the other side of the border, citing continued terrorist attacks in his state and killings of Indian soldiers by Pak armed forces.

In a letter to Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the Chief Minister has welcomed the historic occasion, which he described as the cherished desire of the Sikhs around the world, but said he must most reluctantly, however, regret his inability to be present.

The Chief Minister said his reasons for declining the invitation were twofold. Firstly, not a day passes when Indian soldiers are not killed or wounded on the line of control in Jammu and Kashmir, he said, adding that “Rather than moving towards normalcy these incidents are escalating.” Captain Amarinder pointed out that a few months ago, his battalion lost one Major and two jawans in an ambush laid on the Indian side of the line of control, well within the Indian territory.

Secondly, said the Chief Minister, the ISI has started its nefarious activities within Punjab and since his Government was sworn in, in March 2017, the state had neutralized 19 ISI armed and controlled modules, apprehended 81 terrorists and recovered 79 weapons, in addition to numerous grenades of the HG 84 type made in Pakistan’s Ordnance factories, with Austrian knowhow, along with seizure of some IEDs.

“The last attack was in Amritsar last Sunday, on a peaceful religious congregation in one of our villages, in which 3 men were killed and 19, including women and children, were wounded,” Captain Amarinder further pointed out, adding that both terrorists had since been caught.

“I hope the Prime Minister will understand that under these circumstances it will not be possible for me to be present in Pakistan on this historic occasion, despite the fact that paying my respects at Gurdwara Sri Kartarpur Sahib has always been my cherished dream which will hopefully be fulfilled once these hostilities and killings are stopped,” the Chief Minister has stated.

While thanking Qureshi for the invitation for the ceremony to lay the foundation stone of the proposed corridor linking Gurdwara Sahib Kartarpur to Dera Baba Nanak in Indian Punjab, where Sri Guru Nanak Devji spent the last 18 years of his life, the Chief Minister recalled his visit to Pakistan, when he had paid his respects at Gurdwara Sri Nankana Sahib and Gurdwara Sri Panja Sahib where his father Maharaja Yadvindra Singh had reconstructed Gurdwara Sri Panja Sahib in 1932.

“As you will see from the stone laid at Gurdwara Sri Kartarpur Sahib, it was my grandfather Maharaja Bhupindra Singh who carried out flood protection measures from 1920 to 1929 to protect our Gurdwara which was being ravaged by floods in the river Ravi each year,” he further wrote.

“A visit to Sri Kartarpur Sahib has been a long cherished dream, and I hope once normalcy between our two countries is restored I will be able to do so, when the corridor is complete,” said the Chief Minister, recalling his own meeting with Qureshi during his Pak visit.

In conclusion, the Chief Minister expressed the hope that the Pakistani prime minister “will do all he can to bring our two countries together on the road to peace and friendship.”

Punjab CM declines Pak Foreign Minister’s invite For Kartarpur Corridor foundation Stone Laying

https://www.ptcnews.tv/kartarpur-sahib-corridor-vice-president-lay-foundation-stone-tomorrow

Kartarpur Sahib Corridor : Vice President to lay foundation stone tomorrow

https://www.ptcnews.tv/kartarpur-sahib-corridor-vice-president-lay-foundation-stone-tomorrow

Sun, 25 Nov 2018 09:13:09 +0530

Kartarpur Sahib Corridor : Vice President to lay foundation stone tomorrow
