Officials in Canada have indicated that Carney will not participate in cultural showcases such as Bhangra performances, nor will he travel to Punjab, a departure from past high-profile visits by Canadian leaders. The decision is being viewed as a calculated move aimed at avoiding controversy while focusing on substantive diplomatic engagement.

The contrast with former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s 2018 India visit is notable. Trudeau had drawn criticism both in Canada and India for donning elaborate traditional outfits and for what New Delhi described as Canada’s leniency toward pro-Khalistan elements. Relations deteriorated further last year after Trudeau publicly alleged that Indian agents could have been linked to the killing of a Canadian citizen associated with Sikh separatist activism,  an accusation India has strongly rejected.

Carney is scheduled to land in Mumbai on Friday. The visit marks his first official engagement with India as prime minister and comes at a time when Ottawa is seeking to diversify its global partnerships amid shifting geopolitical alignments. Diplomatic sources suggest the focus will be on trade, economic cooperation and strategic dialogue rather than symbolism.

Unlike some of his predecessors, Carney will not include Punjab in his itinerary. The state holds political significance given Canada’s sizeable Sikh diaspora. However, with separatist sentiments among a small but vocal section of the community continuing to strain diplomatic sensitivities, Ottawa appears keen to avoid adding fuel to an already delicate situation.

Partha Mohanram, a professor at the University of Toronto, described Carney as “strategic” and unlikely to engage in gestures that could distract from policy objectives. According to Mohanram, the PM's emphasis will remain on rebuilding institutional trust rather than headline-grabbing optics.

At the same time, Carney’s approach has drawn criticism from some Sikh advocacy organisations in Canada. The World Sikh Organisation of Canada has argued that Ottawa has not done enough to address concerns about alleged foreign interference and the safety of Sikh Canadians.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand has maintained that discussions with Indian authorities have taken place at senior levels regarding criminal investigations and alleged transnational activities. She said new mechanisms have been introduced to monitor financial irregularities, cyber threats and surveillance concerns within diaspora communities. Anand also underscored that Canada’s evolving foreign policy places domestic security at the centre of its international engagements.

Following his India stop, Carney is expected to travel to Australia for talks covering defence cooperation, trade expansion and strategic partnerships. He will later return to Ottawa for meetings with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, where discussions are likely to include collaboration in the automotive sector, clean energy initiatives and critical mineral supply chains.

According to officials, some suburbs recorded over 200 mm of rainfall in the 21-hour period ending at 5:30 am on Wednesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for heavy rain in Mumbai for Wednesday but forecast a reduction in intensity from Thursday.

Train services on the harbour line resumed around 3 am on Wednesday as floodwaters receded from the tracks. Suburban services on the CR’s main line, connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Thane, had already restarted on Tuesday evening after an eight-hour halt. All CR lines are now operational, a railway spokesperson confirmed.

Authorities, however, cautioned that with the IMD predicting more heavy showers in the region, passengers should travel only if necessary and remain alert.

The fresh spells of rain followed a day of intense downpour that inundated roads across Mumbai, once again underscoring the city’s recurring monsoon woes. Civic officials reported that in the 22-hour period ending at 6 am on Wednesday, the city received an average of over 100 mm of rain — with the island city recording 131.51 mm, eastern suburbs 159.66 mm, and western suburbs 150.60 mm.

According to reports, 29 pilgrims from Moga, Punjab, were returning from a visit to the Chamunda Temple when the accident occurred around 7.30 am. Local residents and police personnel immediately rushed to the spot to rescue the injured and took the injured to nearby medical facilities.

A female pilgrim died at the site, while three others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. The deceased are two women and two men. The accident took place near Bailey Hotel on the Chamunda-Dharamshala road.

Doctors at Tanda Medical College said 13 of the injured remain in critical condition, while 10 others sustained minor injuries and were under treatment.

The deceased pilgrims are Lambi Singh (35), Jasveer Singh (35, Paramjeet Kaur (40) an d Kiran (33).

The injured pilgrims are Karim Singh (35), Harpreet Singh (9), Anmol Singh (13), Jaspreet Singh (8), Satnam (13), Arshdeep (20), Lakhveer Singh (27), Arshdeep (19), Harman (23), Balwinder Kaur (21), Akashdeep (16), Lovepreet (24), Kulwant Singh (35), Aman Deep (32), Harmeet Singh (11), Harmanpreet Singh (11), Harsimran Kaur (11), Virendra (30), Fateh Singh (15), Sahpreet Singh (11), Nirbhay (34, driver), Angrez (38, driver). Poonam (35) and Simran Kaur (30) escaped unhurt.

The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.

The incident unfolded in Navi Mumbai and fishermen spotted the body around 4:30 pm on Wednesday and promptly notified the authorities. 

Police identified the deceased as Bhavika More, a college student from Nerul.

Initial investigations suggest Bhavika was in a relationship with Swastik Patil, a 22-year-old man. 

CCTV footage shows the couple heading towards the lake around 4 pm but not returning. Police suspect a quarrel led to Swastik allegedly strangling Bhavika, disposing of her body in the lake, and then committing suicide.

Authorities are currently searching for Swastik, and the exact cause of Bhavika's death will be confirmed after the autopsy. For now, a case of accidental death has been registered.

The tragic incident captured on CCTV camera which showcased a 20-year-old man was injured after a gym trainer struck him with a Mudgal—a wooden club used for exercise—in a Mumbai gym.

According to CCTV footage, Shinde was working out at the gym in Mulund East when Nakel picked up the wooden club and hit him on the head.

Several videos also depict thousands of individuals rushing toward the interview venue, with some resorting to climbing vehicles and trees in their haste to reach it.

The walk-in-interview organisers struggled to control the massive crowd, which resulted in scenes of jostling at the form counters. Many applicants endured hours of waiting without access to food and water, causing some to feel unwell.

The stampede-like-situation at Mumbai highlights intense competition for job opportunities and underscores concerns over managing large-scale recruitment events effectively.

Air India Airport Services Ltd has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident or outlined future steps for the ongoing recruitment efforts.

The victims were warkaris (devotees of Lord Vitthal) traveling from their hometown of Dombivli near Mumbai to Pandharpur for the Ashadhi Ekadashi celebrations.  

As per the reports, a total of 42 passengers from Dombivli were on their way to Pandharpur when the fatal incident unfolded. 

All the injured were admitted to a nearby hospital.

Officials reported that a bus carrying devotees from Kesar village in Dombivli to Pandharpur in Maharashtra met with an accident. 

The incident disrupted vehicular movement on the Mumbai-Lonavala lane of the Mumbai Express Highway. 

A crane was used to retrieve the bus, and traffic on the lane resumed after three hours.

Several fans, who gathered at Mumbai's Marine Drive for the victory parade of the T20 World Cup-winning Indian cricket team, were injured and some faced trouble breathing on Thursday. 

Eyewitnesses described scenes of distress as people struggled to move and breathe in the densely packed crowd. Ravi Solanki, an office worker who witnessed the chaos, recounted his experience and said, "I was coming from the office and came to know that the Indian team would reach here between 5 pm-6 pm, which did not happen. The crowd kept increasing. The police were not managing the situation. People suddenly started shouting, after which some people fell on each other. It was very unorganised. There was nobody to manage. The incident happened between 8:15-8:45 pm."

Rishab Mahesh Yadav, who fell unconscious during the parade, shared his ordeal and said, "The crowd was increasing. I fell and got choked. I became unconscious. I was taken to the nearby hospital, where I received treatment. I feel fine now. The crowd was more than necessary. There was mismanagement. The police were also not alert."

Rohit Sharma-led team kicked off the open-top bus parade from Marine Drive.

Fans turned up in numbers, danced to the tune of India's success, and celebrated the arrival of the T20 World Cup-winning team.Throughout the parade, players were seen lifting the coveted trophy high in the air and appreciating the support of their fans.

The love of the fans was clearly visible when some of them climbed on the tree and cheered for the team as the bus went past them.

India's World Cup-winning players distributed balls to the fans who were present at the stadium. Fans took selfies and asked for autographs from the cricketers as well.

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) office bearers presented the T20 World Cup-winning Indian team with a cheque of Rs 125 crores here at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The Indian team was felicitated at the Wankhede Stadium after the conclusion of the victory parade, which started at Marine Drive in Mumbai on Thursday evening.

While addressing the media in Maharashtra's Mumbai, Fadnavis said, “Whatever loss we suffered in the LS polls in Maharashtra, I take full responsibility for it. Therefore, I urge the top leadership to relieve me of my ministerial duties for I need to work for the party and contribute my time to the preparations of the state assembly polls.”

"Farmers' issues played a dominant role in some seats. Also, the false propaganda that the constitution would be altered impacted some voters. The outright votes of the Muslims and the Maratha movement has an impact", he added.

The BJP's seat count in Maharashtra dropped to nine from 23 in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, with a vote share of 26.18%. Meanwhile, the Congress slightly improved its performance, securing 13 seats in the state.

In contrast, the Congress party saw substantial growth, winning 99 seats compared to 52 in 2019 and 44 in 2014. The INDIA bloc surpassed the 230-seat mark, challenging predictions from exit polls.

In a recent drink driving case, a woman, her son and a three-month-old Infant seriously injured after being struck by a car in Maharashtra’s Nagpur on Friday night. 

As per the police, the driver is suspected to be drunk as liquor bottles has been recovered from his car. 

The incident unfolded near Zenda Chowk in the densely populated Mahal area of the city. The driver, along with two friends, was reportedly drinking while traveling in the car when they hit the family.

All three victims are receiving treatment at a hospital, with the baby in critical condition. The three men attempted to flee the scene, but locals chased them down. One was caught and beaten by the crowd before being handed over to the police, who also smashed the car windows.

The investigation is underway.

3 dead, 59 injured as hoarding collapses in Mumbai

As many as 3 killed, 59 were injured after a massive hoarding collapsed in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area on Monday amid strong winds.              

A complaint will be filed by registering an FIR under the Disaster Management Act, the BMC Public Relations Office said.

The search and rescue operation is in process.

The harrowing incident unfolded when Sahidun, the wife of Khusruddin Ansari, was admitted to the Sushma Swaraj maternity home in Mumbai's Bhandup area, which is operated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and during the Caesarian delivery hospital experienced a power outage, and the generator was not activated for three hours. Despite the loss of the mother and child, another delivery was reportedly conducted in the darkness. 

Following the horrific incident, members of the family erupted protests outside the hospital, prompting the BMC to initiate an inquiry into the incident.

Pregnant woman mother-in-law mother said, "My daughter-in-law was absolutely healthy and had been pregnant for nine months. All her reports were okay. They took her for the delivery at 7 am on April 29, kept her the whole day and, until 8 pm, we were told everything was fine. Doctors told us that the delivery would be normal. Then, when I went to meet her, I saw that she was covered in blood."

Ansari, grief-stricken and demanding justice, called for the punishment of the responsible doctors and staff, along with the closure of the hospital. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting his own challenges as a specially abled individual with limited resources.

The family provided evidence of another delivery being conducted under similar conditions, underscoring the dire situation at the hospital. The incident has sparked outrage and calls for accountability from authorities.

Meanwhile, a senior doctor from the maternity hospital, who chose to remain anonymous, also commented on the power outage, highlighting an issue with the generator. "Surgery was nearly completed when the electricity went out. They had to resort to using a torch due to problems with the generator,” doctor said. 

In an unfortunate incident, at least 12 people were admitted to a hospital after consuming a non-vegetarian street food delicacy in the Goregaon district. 

The incident unfolded at Satellite Tower in Santosh Nagar area of Goregaon (East) on Friday after eating chicken shawarma.

Following their consumption of the street food item, symptoms of food poisoning began to manifest among the diners, prompting their admission to a nearby hospital. Among the dozen individuals affected, nine have fortunately been discharged after receiving medical care. However, three individuals remain under observation and are undergoing treatment. 

"Twelve people complained of food poisoning on Friday and Saturday. They were admitted to a hospital. While nine people were discharged, three others are undergoing treatment," the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official said without elaborating on whether the food was consumed by the 12 people at a hotel or shop. 

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of food safety and hygiene standards, particularly within the vibrant street food culture of Mumbai and underscores the need for heightened awareness and caution when indulging in street food delicacies.

In a strategic move, heavy vehicles such as multi-axle trucks and buses destined for Mumbai will not be permitted entry on the Eastern Freeway. Instead, they are directed to use the Mumbai Port-Sewri Exit (Exit 1C) and navigate through the MBPT Road near 'Gadi Adda' for further movement.

Furthermore, certain vehicles, including motorcycles, mopeds, three-wheelers, autos, tractors, animal-drawn vehicles, and slow-moving vehicles, are restricted from accessing the sea bridge altogether. These restrictions are part of the Mumbai police's comprehensive plan to manage traffic flow and uphold safety standards.

"The Mumbai Police Department is on high alert; no one will succeed in any way. Our police officers are capable in every way, and anyone who does something wrong or violates the rules will be punished. Strong action will be taken against the perpetrators," said CM Shinde.

'Bomb scare' in Mumbai

For the unversed, Mumbai Police swung into action after an anonymous caller warned of serial blasts in the city, officials said on Sunday.

"On Saturday evening, around 6 p.m., Mumbai Police Control received a threat call. Before hanging up, the caller stated that there would be serial blasts in Mumbai," an official said.

The police responded by conducting searches at several key public places and installations throughout the city. However, no explosives or anything suspicious were discovered.

"Police are currently trying to find out the details of the caller," the official said, adding that an investigation is ongoing.

In response to the distress call, emergency services swiftly mobilised and arrived at the accident site to deliver immediate assistance. The injured passengers were expeditiously transported to the closest medical facility, ensuring they received the required treatment.

In a recent spine-chilling and horrifying incident from Mumbai’s Thane, a 26-year-old girlfriend shared harrowing ordeal of how an argument with man resulted in serious injuries to her. 

In the distressing incident which unfolded on Monday, a 26-year-old woman was seriously injured after her boyfriend and his friends slapped, strangles, beat, hit and tried to run car over her after a party in Mumbai’s Thane. 

The seriously injured woman, Priya Singh took to her social media handle to share the harrowing ordeal of how her boyfriend Ashwajit Gaikwad and his friends allegedly beaten her, tried to strangle her, and then asked driver to mow her down. 

The harrowing ordeal 

The horrific and dreadful incident pertains to Monday when Priya Singh received a call from her boyfriend asking her to join him at a family function. 

Priya Singh took to her Instagram handle and shared a serious of pictures telling her harrowing ordeal. In her posts, she wrote, “Upon reaching there I met some friends and found that my boyfriend was behaving Strange. So l asked him if everything was fine and insisted him for us to talk in private.” 

“I stepped out of the function and waited for him. He along with his friends came outside. I tried talking to him but his friend (Romil Patil) wouldn't let me do that instead started insulting me. This Further blew up into a heated argument. My boyfriend and his friend used abusive language to which I asked my boyfriend to defend me and not abuse which led to the start of something beyond my imagination.”

“My boyfriend slapped me, tried to strangle my neck, I tried to push him away he bit my hand, beat me, pulled my hair and his friend out of no where pushed me to the ground,” she added. 

In next picture of her Instagram post, she added, “I immediately rushed to my boyfriend near his car to get my phone and bag (he had snatched my belongings during the fight and kept it in his car)”

“As soon as I reached to his Car (Range Rover Defender) I heard him Say "Uda de isko " to his driver (Sagar). His driver sped up the car and hit me from the left corner of the vehicle which got me to the ground and the Rear left wheel of the car went over my right leg.”

“I was left on the street in pain for around 30 mins all alone withoud my phone or any help. A passenger by saw me and informed the local police. This stranger stayed near me to help me.” 

Priya Singh’s left leg is completely injured and she had undergone surgery and she suffered with bruises all over her body, arms, necks and stomach area. 

She has been bedridden for minimum 3 to 4 months and after that also she will have to take support to walk for another 6 months.
