Activist Who Shouted At Jeff Bezos Arrested

Indian-American activist Priya Sawhney, who interrupted Amazon Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos'' on-stage talk, has been arrested on trespassing and burglary charges, according to media reports. Ms Sawhney, 30, rushed on stage during Amazon''s "re:MARS" event here on Thursday and asked Bezos to do something about "chicken farms". Ms Sawhney evaded event security, as well as some of Bezos'' personal detail, which costs a reported USD 1.6 million per year, the BBC reported. "You are the world''s richest man. You're the President of Amazon and you can help the animals," she shouted, asking Jeff Bezos to stop the abuses of animals in California farms, the report said. The security guards quickly surrounded her and took her away. Jeff Bezos and Jenny Freshwater, another Amazon executive on stage at the time, sat calmly as the woman was removed. A judge in Las Vegas says a California animal rights activist can be freed from jail without bail pending her next court date on felony charges for approaching Bezos, the world''s richest man, on a conference stage, according to a media report. Ms Sawhney is due again in court July 15 on false identification and burglary charges. In Nevada, burglary relates to entering a building with intent to commit a felony, the report said.

UK Parl elections-Gatka Association and Punjabi Cultural Council facilitates Dhesi, Gill Seema Malhotra for attaining victory

Chandigarh: Hailing the achievement of Punjabis in UK parliamentary elections, the National Gatka Association of India and Punjabi Cultural Council have extended warm congratulations to Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi – the first turban-wearing Sikh MP, Preet Kaur Gill – the first Sikh woman MP and Seema Malhotra over their impressive victory in election to the House of Commons.

In a joint statement National Gatka Association of India President S. Harjeet Singh Grewal and Punjabi Cultural Council Vice Chairman Raghbir Sharma has sent rousing felicitations to S. Dhesi, Preet Gill and Seema Malhotra on their thumping success in UK parliamentary elections. They said the electorates of Slough has elected a dedicated hard worker and young representative Mr Dhesi in the British parliament who would have the same visible impact in Europe that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had in raising the profile of the Punjabis and particularly the Sikhs in the world.

Gatka promoter S. Grewal said asserted that now Sikhs and Punjabis would have an effective voice in UK Parliament as both Dhesi and Gill are well respected within the community and are in touch with Gurdwaras' sangats. "They understand current issues and problems being faced by the community. Also they are very articulate having vast knowledge and immense potential to raise the voice of diaspora in the House of Commons", he added.

S. Grewal and Raghbir said S. Dhesi had done a lot for people especially the Kent County during his tenure as mayor and played an active role in establishing a magnificent Gurudwara sahib at Gravesend. He added that Punjabi community in UK and India speaks high of him as he has always upheld the spirit of Punjabi and Punjabiat among the diaspora.

S. Grewal, who is also chairman of International Sikh Martial Art Academy, said that S. Dhesi is heading UK Gatka Federation since six years and organizing national level Gatka championships successfully every year in different cities of Britain besides promoting other games also.

Meanwhile Harjeet Singh Grewal and Raghbir Sharma has also sent their warm felicitations to Virendra Sharma who has retained his Ealing Southall seat comfortably for the fourth time in a row.

China condemns EU for new steel anti-dumping duties

Beijing: China has condemned the European Commission for imposing new anti-dumping duties on its steel products, accusing the EU's executive of making China an industrial scapegoat. The 28-nation bloc said yesterday that it would levy duties of up to 35.9 per cent on Chinese hot-rolled flat steel in an attempt to create a level playing field with China as it broadens its campaign to protect Europe's struggling steel manufacturers. The EU alleged China, which makes more than half the world's steel, has flooded global markets in violation of international trade agreements. According to the EC, Chinese producers benefit from preferential lending, tax rebates and other financial help that allow exports to the EU at artificially-low prices. But China said the bloc's action stemmed from a misunderstanding of China's financial loan system and trade trends. "The European Commission ignores the fact that China's steel exports to Europe clearly declined in 2016, using China's steel overcapacity as an excuse to claim that China's hot-rolled flat steel products threaten to damage industry in the EU when that is mere speculation with little bearing on reality," Chinese commerce ministry official Wang Hejun said in a statement today. "China strongly questions the legitimacy and legality of the European Commission's ruling." The EU has had a series of trade disputes with China, its second-largest trading partner, but is also seeking to resolve the stand-off over steel with Beijing through the OECD, the Paris-based group of developed economies. In January, the Commission imposed anti-dumping duties on China's stainless steel tube and pipe butt-welding fittings. Like hot-rolled flat steel, the products are commonly used in shipbuilding as well as energy and construction. Wang noted that China has not only refrained from subsidising steel exports, but also adopted several measures to control them. "It is biased and unfair for Europe to blame China for its own industrial issues," he said. "Unjustified accusations and reckless trade rescue measures will not help to solve the problem. —PTI News
