Disclosing this here ON Saturday, Vigilance Bureau chief director B K Uppal, ADGP, said the bureau has vowed to deal with corruption with an iron hand.

"Adopting a zero tolerance policy towards all forms of corruption, the bureau has arrested 12 Gazetted Officers (GOs) and 122 Non-Gazetted Officials (NGOs) since January 1 to December 30, 2017. Out of this, 25 officers were arrested with bribe money ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh," he said.

The official said that during the year, apart from other departments, 39 officials of Punjab Police, 34 of revenue department, 12 of powercom, 7 of local bodies department, 6 of panchayats and rural development and 5 of irrigation department were nabbed red-handed while taking bribes in separate cases.

A total of 95 vigilance inquiries have been registered to probe graft complaints against 50 GOs, 71 NGOs and 55 private persons, he said.

Five disproportionate asset cases have been registered against four GOs and one NGO, added Uppal.
As part of the safety regulations of Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), all pilots and cabin crew must undergo the breath analyser (BA) test, before and after flights.

"As on 21.12.2017, 28 pilots and 9 cabin crew have skipped the BA test," Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha said in response to a question in Lok Sabha.

He said the license of these pilots and cabin crew were suspended for three months.

Any crew member, who tests positive in the pre-flight medical check or refuses to take a breath analyser test, is taken off flying duty for at least four weeks, and the airline is required to initiate disciplinary proceedings, according to civil aviation rules.

Air India was also involved in a controversy earlier this year when the DGCA warned that more than 500 of its pilots and crew could be grounded for skipping the alcohol test.

Then Air India CMD Rajiv Bansal had written to the DGCA, requesting it to take a lenient view as he said that the airline management had misinterpreted the rules and had taken corrective measures.
From acquiring citizenship to outsmarting humans at complex games, from composing music to writing novels, from assisting doctors to helping fight judicial cases, artificial intelligence (AI) made its presence felt throughout the year.

Artificial intelligence is a term used to describe systems or machines that mimic the cognitive functions of human minds, such as learning and problem solving.

[caption id="attachment_92847" align="aligncenter" width="300"] When artificial intelligence outsmarted humans[/caption]

Although by no means a new concept, the technology made headlines throughout the year.

Perhaps, among the most talked about AI machines this year was Sophia, a humanoid robot designed by a company in Hong Kong, that was granted citizenship in Saudi Arabia - a country where women were not allowed to drive until recently.

The move drew widespread criticism from women, who were distraught to see an AI machine being granted more rights than them.

An AI system called Libratus beat four human players in a Texas Hold 'em Poker marathon match lasting 20 days, winning more than USD 1.5 millions worth of chips.

Meanwhile, Google's AI system 'DeepMind AlphaGo' defeated the world's top player of the ancient Chinese board game of Go - considered to be more challenging for computers than chess.

Getting AI machines to beat humans in complex games is just a part of developing systems that can have applications in medicine, as well as industries that require analysing large amount of data to make decisions.

Already, machine learning systems and robots are helping doctors diagnose diseases and predict life spans.

Scientists at Stanford University developed an AI system that can detect life-threatening irregular heartbeats by quickly sifting through hours of heart rhythm data. The algorithm reportedly performs better than trained cardiologists.

A team from Florida State University in the US developed an AI tool that can predict whether someone will attempt suicide as far off as two years into the future with up to 80 per cent accuracy.

The achievements of AI are not limited to the field of medicine.

An Indian start-up developed a website called LegitQuest with an AI powered search tool that allows users to browse through millions of legal case records and find the most relevant results in seconds.

The tool could help lawyers cut down on the time they take to conduct research before appearing for a case.

Meanwhile, Stanford scientists have developed a system that can predict court decisions better than legal scholars, even with less information.

Another AI system, called VALCRI (Visual Analytics for Sense-Making in Criminal Intelligence), developed by researchers from Middlesex University London can help solve crimes by taking over the laborious task of analysing clues and finding links that human investigators might have missed.

Such systems could give human detectives like Sherlock Holmes a run for money, performing the tedious part a crime analyst's job in seconds.

Apart from teaching machines to process data, researchers are also inculcating AI systems with creative capabilities.

An AI robot 'Shimon' developed at Georgia Institute of Technology in the US is trained to compose music inspired by the works of musicians - from Beethoven to Lady Gaga.

A UK-based company developed an AI system that can turn people's sketches into paintings reminiscent of the works by great Renaissance artists such as Vincent van Gogh.

Not only has the developing capabilities of AIs raised fears of a large section of human workforce losing jobs, many critics have pointed out the potential dangers of building machines that can "think like humans".

A survey by researchers from Oxford University in the UK and Yale University in the US showed that most researchers believe AI systems could outperform humans in all tasks within the next 45 years, and that all human jobs will be automated in the next 120 years.

Even renowned British scientist Stephen Hawking warned that the creation of powerful artificial intelligence may turn out to be "the worst thing ever to happen to humanity" despite its potential benefits.

However, in a study published in the journal Science this month, researchers found that it is unlikely that AI systems will replace people in all jobs.

Instead machine learning computer systems, which get better with experience, will transform the economy and the nature of a lot of human jobs.

For now, there is little need to panic. Despite many feats, AI is still far from world domination.

An AI robot that took a college entrance exam in China managed to barely scrape a passing grade.

An AI system in the US, trained to write the next Game of Thrones novel, spun out five chapters of comical literary nonsense.

Like every other technological innovation in the past, AI too has its set of pros and cons. While its potential applications and benefits are huge, in wrong hands, the technology could indeed spell dire consequences for humans.

One thing is for certain: AI systems are here to stay, and with time they will only get smarter. On most occasions the smaller films starring the young stars of Bollywood beat the so-called mainstream, commercial movies of top stars, both at the box-office and in terms of critical acclaim.

[caption id="attachment_92109" align="aligncenter" width="208"] Half Girlfriend[/caption]

"2017 has been a bad year in terms of box office, it is a wake up call for the industry that they need to sincerely work towards entertaining audience and give them a cinematic experience which is worth their money.

[caption id="attachment_92111" align="aligncenter" width="204"] Badrinath Ki Dulhania[/caption]

"This year, it has been observed that script is actually an important factor and not the superstars. Some films had no stars but did well all because of good content," exhibitor Akshay Rathi said.

[caption id="attachment_92108" align="aligncenter" width="220"] Rangoon[/caption]

The year opened with the clash between Hrithik Roshan starrer "Kaabil" and Shah Rukh Khan's "Raaes". Both did decent business at the box office

"Jolly LLB 2" (Akshay Kumar), "Badrinath Ki Dulhania" (Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt), Irrfan Khan and Pakistani actor Saba Qamar's comedy drama "Hindi Medium" and Sridevi's rape revenge drama "Mom" did well in the medium budget category.Akshay struck gold again at the box office with "Toilet: Ek Prem Katha", which dealt with the issue of sanitation.

Films such as "Bareilly Ki Barfi", "Shubh Mangal Saavdhan" a quirky romantic-drama talking about the issue of erectile dysfunction, Rajkummar Rao's "Newton", which was India's official entry for Best Foreign Language Film at 90th Academy Awards, were the true winners this year.

Rathi said it was the year of sequels as films like "Baahubali: The Conclusion", "Jolly LLB 2", "Badrinath Ki Dulhania", "Golmaal Again" and "Fukrey Returns" hit the ball out of the park.

The last big outing of 2017, Salman Khan-Katrina Kaif starrer, "Tiger Zinda Hai", ended the lull at the ticket windows as the film crossed the 150 crore-mark on the fourth day of its release. The Ali Abbas Zafar-directed sequel was a breather for Salman fans after the "Tubelight" shocker early this year.

[caption id="attachment_92112" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Tiger Zinda Hai[/caption]

According to Rathi, the highest grossing film this year was "Baahubali..." earned over Rs 1,000 crore in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages in India and "Golmaal Again" grossed approximately Rs 210 crore.

However, the third installment in the "Sarkar" series did not fair well and "Naam Shabana", the spin-off of 2015 film "Baby" did not do well.

Biopics, which is fast becoming Bollywood's most favorite genre, were aplenty, but did not put up a great show economically."Poorna: Courage Has No Limit", a biopic on the youngest girl to climb Mount Everest, film based on the life of underworld don-politician Arun Gawli "Daddy" and "Haseena Parkar" failed to impress.

"Sachin: A Billion Dreams", a docudrama-biographical film on cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was an exception.

Films based on true events such as "The Ghazi Attack", "Indu Sarkar", "Partition: 1947" and "Lucknow Central" did not deliver.

The list of flops is a long one with "Rangoon", "Phillauri", "Maatr", "Begum Jaan", "Noor", "Half Girlfriend", "Raabta", "A Gentleman", "Babumoshai Bandookbaaz", "Poster Boys", among others.

Some of the most anticipated movies - such as "Jagga Jasoos", "Jab Harry Met Sejal", Sanjay Dutt's comeback vehicle, "Bhoomi", "Simran" and "Chef" also fell flat at the box office.

According to film and music analyst-historian Rajiv Vijaykar, Hindi cinema is suffering today as it is losing its hold on the weapon of mass attraction - "music". He told 2017 was a lean year as the makers failed to connect with the audience at pan India level.

"This year there were very few songs that stayed with the audience. It was more of recreation of songs, there were 30 such songs, both film and non-film, I think not everybody has the ability to come up with original songs," Vijaykar said.

The fact that some small-budget films with upcoming actors of B-town brought the audience to the theatres shows the masses are slowly changing their preferences from blockbusters with big stars to the story of the movie.

Smaller films, such as Aamir Khan produced "Secret Superstar" with Zaira Wasim in the lead, and Vidya Balan's outing as the effervescent middle-class ambitious housewife in "Tumhari Sulu", proved value for their money clubbed with fresh story ideas.

Bollywood: Rewind 2017 - Young guns outshine top stars in 2017
