scripted history by becoming the first Indian to clinch two gold
medals at the Paralympics after he broke his own world record to
clinch the top honours at the ongoing Rio Games here.
The 36-year-old, who won his previous gold in the 2004 Athens
Games, bettered his own world record to finish on top in the men's F46 event.
Devendra, whose previous best was 62.15 metres (achieved in
the 2004 Games), improved the mark with an attempt of 63.97 metres
at the Olympic Stadium (Engenhao).
Another Indian Rinku Hooda, who also competed in the event,
finished fifth with a personal best of 54.39 metres in six attempts,
while Sundar Singh Gurjar didn't start the event.
The Rajasthan born athlete had lost his left hand when he was
electrocuted while climbing a tree as an eight-year-old. But he continued
to follow his dream and went on to achieve the Arjuna award in 2004
and the Padma Shri in 2012, becoming the first Paralympian to receive
the honour.
Devendra, who won the gold at the International Paralympic Committee's
(IPC) Athletics World Championships in Lyon in 2013, last participated
in the Paralympics 12 years ago as the F46 event did not feature
in the 2008 and the 2012 editions.
Currently ranked third in the world, Devendra swelled India's
medal tally at Rio to four medals -- two golds, one silver and a bronze.
Thangavelu Mariyappan had earlier struck gold in the men's high
jump, while Varun Bhati had secured a bronze in the same event.
Later, Deepa Malik won a silver in the women's shot put event
to add to the tally.
Accolades started to pour in for Devendra as from Prime Minister
Narendra Modi to cricketers such as Virendra Sehwag and Mohammad
Kaif congratulated the athlete for his stupendous feat at Rio.
"Congratulations to Devendra Jhajharia for the historic and
well-deserved Gold at the #Paralympics. We are very proud of him.
#Rio2016," Modi wrote in a tweet.
Sehwag wrote: "#Paralympics is pyaara-lympics. Bow down to #DevendraJhajharia
fr d Gold&new World Record.He won Gold in2004as well."
"Congrats #DevendraJhajharia fr the Gold& new World Record.Truly
inspiring, wishing fr more coverage than ur 2004 gold," Kaif wrote
in his twitter handle.
2004 Athen Olympics silver medallist shooter, Rajyavardhan
Rathore also wrote: "Congratulations #DevendraJhajharia Your #Gold
@ #Paralympics is inspiring to many. Kudos to your efforts ?? #Rio2016."
India's Olympic gold medallist shooter, Abhinav Bindra also
heaped praise on Devendra. "Many many congratulations to Devendra
Jhajharia. You inspire us all."
Tennis star Rohan Bopanna tweeted: "Congrats Devendra Jhajharia
for breaking your own world record &making the country proud."

Javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia wins gold at Paralympics

https://www.ptcnews.tv/deepa-scripts-history-wins-silver-in-paralympics

Deepa scripts history, wins silver in Paralympics

https://www.ptcnews.tv/deepa-scripts-history-wins-silver-in-paralympics

Tue, 13 Sep 2016 11:18:12 +0530

Rio de Janeiro, (PTI) India's Deepa Malik today created

history by becoming the first-ever woman from the country to win
a medal at the Paralympics when she bagged a silver in the shotput
F-53 event here.
Deepa's best throw of 4.61m from her six attempts was enough
to clinch the silver medal.
India, thus, now have secured three medal from the Rio Paralympics.
Deepa will receive a cash award of Rs 4 crore under Haryana
Sports Scheme for her feat.
Bahrain's Fatema Nedham won the gold medal with a best throw
of 4.76m, while Dimitra Korokida of Greece bagged the bronze medal
with a throw of 4.28m.
Deepa is a paraplegic, paralysed from waist down and mother
of two and wife of an Army officer. Life took a twist when a spinal
tumour made walking impossible for her 17 years ago.
The spinal tumour had to be operated and 31 surgeries were conducted
on Deepa which was healed after 183 stitches between her waist and legs.
Besides shotput, Deepa has participated in javelin throw, swimming
and has also been a motivational speaker.
She has also won medals in swimming at international competitions.
She holds the Asian record in javelin throw, and also has World Championships
silver medals in shot put and discus in 2011.
Deepa's silver is India's third medal of the Games after Mariyappan
Thangavelu and Varun Singh Bhati won gold and bronze respectively
in men's high jump.

Deepa scripts history, wins silver in Paralympics

https://www.ptcnews.tv/thagavelu-wins-gold-bhati-bronze-in-rio-paralympics

Thagavelu wins gold, Bhati bronze in Rio Paralympics

https://www.ptcnews.tv/thagavelu-wins-gold-bhati-bronze-in-rio-paralympics

Sun, 11 Sep 2016 10:03:25 +0530

Rio de Janeiro, (PTI) India made an impressive start

to its campaign at the Paralympic Games with Mariyappan Thangavelu
creating history by bagging the gold while Varun Bhati won the bronze
medal in the men's T42 high jump on the second day of the mega-event, here.
But it was disappointment for another Indian athlete Sharad
Kumar who failed to finish on the podium.
Thangavelu won the yellow metal with his best jump of 1.89 metres,
while Bhati's best effort of 1.86m fetched him the bronze.
The silver medal in this event went to USA's Sam Grewe who also
registered the same mark of 1.86 metres.
But it was heartbreak for Kumar, who led the pack at one stage
after clearing hurdles of 1.55m and 1.60m. His best jump, though,
was only 1.77m which placed him at the sixth position.
The event witnessed huge competition as six out of the 12 para
athletes cleared the 1.74m mark in their first eight attempts.
In his 10th attempt, Thangavelu jumped 1.77m successfully, along
with three others – Poland's Lukasz Mamczarz, China's Zhiqiang Zhing
and countrymate Kumar.
In the later stages with the contest being reduced to only three
competitors, Bhati set the tone with a jump of 1.83m mark along with Thagavelu.
However, just when it looked like India would fetch a gold and
a silver, the American cleared 1.86m to grab the top spot but the
Indians also equalled the height to make it even.
Eventually, in a nail biting finale, Thangavelu grabbed the
top honours by finishing with a jump of 1.89m.

Thagavelu wins gold, Bhati bronze in Rio Paralympics

https://www.ptcnews.tv/19-indian-players-are-participating-in-rio-paralympics-2016

19 Indian players are participating in Rio Paralympics 2016

https://www.ptcnews.tv/19-indian-players-are-participating-in-rio-paralympics-2016

Fri, 09 Sep 2016 23:21:24 +0530

19 Indian players are participating in Rio Paralympics 2016

https://www.ptcnews.tv/yogeshwar-dutts-bronze-of-london-2012-olympics-may-turn-silver

Yogeshwar Dutt’s bronze of London 2012 olympics may turn silver

https://www.ptcnews.tv/yogeshwar-dutts-bronze-of-london-2012-olympics-may-turn-silver

Tue, 30 Aug 2016 11:47:05 +0530

After a disappointing return from Rio Olympics 2016, Indian wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt’s bronze for India of London 2012 olympics may get converted into a silver after Russia’s Besik Kudukhov’s sample te

After a disappointing return from Rio Olympics 2016, Indian wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt’s bronze for India of London 2012 olympics may get converted into a silver after Russia’s Besik Kudukhov’s sample tested positive.

Yogeshwar Dutt’s bronze of London 2012 olympics may turn silver

https://www.ptcnews.tv/three-super-girls-conferred-khel-ratna-along-with-jitu-rai

Three super girls conferred Khel Ratna along with Jitu Rai

https://www.ptcnews.tv/three-super-girls-conferred-khel-ratna-along-with-jitu-rai

Mon, 29 Aug 2016 23:09:39 +0530

New Delhi, Aug 29 (PTI) It was a celebration of woman power in sports as Olympic stars PV Sindhu, Sakshi Malik and Dipa Karmakar were today conferred India's highest sporting honour -- the Rajiv Gandh

New Delhi, Aug 29 (PTI) It was a celebration of woman power in sports as Olympic stars PV Sindhu, Sakshi Malik and Dipa Karmakar were today conferred India's highest sporting honour -- the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna -- along with shooter Jitu Rai in a gleaming awards ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhawan here.

For the first time in the history of National Sports Awards, four athletes were chosen for the Khel Ratna honour, owing to the three girls' superlative show at the Rio Olympics.

In 2009, three athletes -- boxers Vijender Singh and M C Mary Kom and wrestler Sushil Kumar -- had been given this award together.

Shuttler Sindhu won a historic silver in the women's singles, Sakshi won India's first ever medal (bronze) in women's wrestling while Dipa grabbed a piece of history for herself with a fourth place finish in artistic gymnastics with her now famous Produnova vault.

Shooter Jitu Rai was always a contender after consistently producing medal-winning performances in the last two years, including gold at the Asian and Commonwealth Games along with a silver at the World Championships.

The four Khel Ratnas, who were greeted with a loud round of applause when they walked up to receive their awards from President Pranab Mukherjee, received a medal, certificate and cash prize of Rs. 7.5 lakh each.

Also honoured were 15 Arjuna awardees who received statuettes, certificates and award money of Rs.5 lakh each.

Long distance runner Lalita Babar, who finished a creditable 10th in the 3000m steeplechase in the Rio Games, boxer Shiva Thapa, only the third Indian to win a World Championships medal last year, and hockey players VR Raghunath and Rani Rampal were among those who received the Arjuna award.

Cricketer Ajinkya Rahane, who was also selected for the Arjuna Award, missed out on the ceremony as he is in the United States with the Indian team for a Twenty20 series against the West Indies.

Teen Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, the first Indian athlete to become a world champion at any level with a gold medal at the U-20 World Championship, was also among the Arjuna winners this year.

Goalkeeper Subrata Paul was the lone footballer in the list of Arjuna awardees, which also included shooter Apurvi Chandela and wrestler Vinesh Phogat.

Vinesh received her award while seated on wheelchair as she is recovering from a knee injury sustained in her second-round bout during the Rio Olympic Games.

This year's Dronacharya Award was conferred upon six coaches, the most notable among them being Dipa's coach Bishweshwar Nandi and India Test team captain Virat Kohli's mentor Raj Kumar Sharma.

Three super girls conferred Khel Ratna along with Jitu Rai

https://www.ptcnews.tv/rio-olympics-silver-and-bronze-medalist-pv-sindhu-and-sakshi-malik-to-meet-pm-modi

Rio Olympics Silver and Bronze medalist PV Sindhu and Sakshi Malik to meet PM Modi

https://www.ptcnews.tv/rio-olympics-silver-and-bronze-medalist-pv-sindhu-and-sakshi-malik-to-meet-pm-modi

Sun, 28 Aug 2016 10:24:18 +0530

Nominees for this year’s National Sports awards, including silver medalist shuttler P V Sindhu and bronze medal winning wrestler Sakshi Malik at Rio Olympic Games, will meet Prime Minister Narendra Mo

Nominees for this year’s National Sports awards, including silver medalist shuttler P V Sindhu and bronze medal winning wrestler Sakshi Malik at Rio Olympic Games, will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The 21-year-old Indian crumbled under the relentless pressure created by Marin to lose 21-19, 12-21, 15-21 in a pulsating final that lasted for an hour and 23 minutes at the Riocentre here.
Sindhu thus became the fourth Indian to win a silver at the Olympics after shooters Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (2004, Athens) and Vijay Kumar (2012, London) and wrestler Sushil Kumar (2012, London).
The two-time World championship bronze medallist also became the fifth woman player from India to win a medal in Olympics and the first to clinch a silver.
Weightlifter Karnam Malleshwari (2000, Sydney), boxer MC Mary Kom (2012, London), shuttler Saina Nehwal (2012, London) and wrestler Sakshi Malik (Rio, 2016) are the other women players from India to have won a medal in Olympics.

Sindhu settles for silver at Rio Olympics

https://www.ptcnews.tv/rio-olympics-2016-chak-de-sports-aug-18-2016

Rio Olympics 2016 | Chak De Sports | Aug 18, 2016

https://www.ptcnews.tv/rio-olympics-2016-chak-de-sports-aug-18-2016

Fri, 19 Aug 2016 15:33:48 +0530

Rio Olympics 2016 | Chak De Sports | Aug 18, 2016

https://www.ptcnews.tv/india-hopes-for-gold-as-pv-sindhu-storms-into-finals-by-defeating-japans-nozomi-okuhara

India hopes for gold as PV Sindhu storms into finals by defeating Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara

https://www.ptcnews.tv/india-hopes-for-gold-as-pv-sindhu-storms-into-finals-by-defeating-japans-nozomi-okuhara

Fri, 19 Aug 2016 10:06:32 +0530

India hopes for gold as PV Sindhu storms into finals by defeating Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara

https://www.ptcnews.tv/wrestler-sakshi-ends-indias-agonising-wait-wins-bronze

WRESTLER SAKSHI ENDS INDIA'S AGONISING WAIT, WINS BRONZE

https://www.ptcnews.tv/wrestler-sakshi-ends-indias-agonising-wait-wins-bronze

Thu, 18 Aug 2016 16:09:42 +0530

RIO DE JANEIRO, AUG 18 (PTI) GRITTY WOMAN WRESTLER SAKSHI MALIK ENDED INDIA'S PAINFUL WAIT FOR A MEDAL AT THE RIO OLYMPIC GAMES BY CLINCHING THE BRONZE IN THE 58KG CATEGORY, PULLING OFF A SENSATIONAL

RIO DE JANEIRO, AUG 18 (PTI) GRITTY WOMAN WRESTLER SAKSHI MALIK ENDED INDIA'S PAINFUL WAIT FOR A MEDAL AT THE RIO OLYMPIC GAMES BY CLINCHING THE BRONZE IN THE 58KG CATEGORY, PULLING OFF A SENSATIONAL 8-5 VICTORY OVER AISULUU TYNYBEKOVA IN THE PLAY-OFF BOUT, HERE.

THE 23-YEAR-OLD FROM ROHTAK BECAME ONLY THE FOURTH WOMAN ATHLETE FROM INDIA TO WIN AN OLYMPIC MEDAL AS SHE EARNED THE DRAMATIC WIN AFTER FALLING BEHIND 0-5 IN THE DO-OR-DIE BOUT ON DAY 12.

WEIGHTLIFTER KARNAM MALLESHWARI (2000, SYDNEY), BOXER MC MARY KOM (2012, LONDON) AND SHUTTLER SAINA NEHWAL (2012, LONDON) WERE THE ONLY OTHER WOMEN PLAYERS FROM INDIA TO HAVE WON A MEDAL IN OLYMPICS.

LIKE IN THREE OF THE FOUR OTHER BOUTS EARLIER IN THE DAY, SAKSHI WON THE CRUCIAL BOUT AFTER COMING FROM BEHIND. SHE, IN FACT, HAD LOST 2-9 IN THE QUARTER-FINALS TO RUSSIA'S VALERIIA KOBLOVA IN THE FIFTH BOUT OF THE DAY BEFORE GETTING A SECOND CHANCE IN REPECHAGE WHEN HER CONQUEROR REACHED THE FINAL.

SAKSHI'S VICTORY BROUGHT CHEERS TO THE INDIAN CONTINGENT THAT HAD ENDURED AGONISING 11 DAYS WITHOUT A MEDAL.
SAKSHI TURNED THE TABLES ON THE KYRGYZSTAN WRESTLER IN THE DYING SECONDS OF THE BOUT AS TYNYBEKOVA WAS IN COMPLETE COMMAND IN MOST PART OF THE CLASH.

TYNYBEKOVA GRABBED SAKSHI'S LEG AND QUICKLY EARNED TWO POINTS BEFORE ADDING ONE MORE FOR THE INDIAN'S PASSIVITY. SHE REPEATED HER MOVE AND SUCCESSFULLY BAGGED TWO MORE POINTS TO LEAD 5-0 AT THE BREAK.

SAKSHI COULD OPEN THE SCORING ONLY IN THE SECOND PERIOD AND GOT TWO POINTS AFTER THROWING HER RIVAL DOWN AND OUT OF THE MAT. SHE THEN MANAGED TO EARN TWO POINTS AGAIN WITH A SIMILAR MOVE TO BRING DOWN THE MARGIN TO 4-5. THEREAFTER, IT WAS NO LOOKING BACK FOR THE INDIAN GIRL AND SHE TOOK THE OPPONENT DOWN TO LEVEL THE SCORES 5-5. BUT SHE DID NOT STOP THERE AND GAINED THREE MORE POINTS BY PINNING DOWN THE KYRGYZSTAN WRESTLER IN THE DYING MOMENTS OF THE MATCH.

SHE HAD EARLIER STORMED INTO THE BRONZE MEDAL PLAY-OFF ROUND WITH A DOMINATING PERFORMANCE IN HER REPECHAGE ROUND, WHERE SHE THRASHED PUREVDORJIIN ORKHON OF MONGOLIA 12-3. BOTH THE WRESTLERS MATCHED EACH OTHER IN THE FIRST PERIOD AND THE SCORES WERE 2-2 AT THE BREAK.
BUT SAKSHI GAVE A MORE AGGRESSIVE ACCOUNT OF HERSELF IN THE SECOND PERIOD, PINNING DOWN HER OPPONENT FROM TIME TO TIME, BESIDES FLIPPING HER OVER FOR CRUCIAL POINTS. STARTING WITH A DOUBLE-LEG TAKE DOWN TO EARN TWO POINTS, SHE ADDED TWO MORE CRUCIAL POINTS TO HER KITTY TO LEAD 6-3 WITH A MINUTE LEFT.

WRESTLER SAKSHI ENDS INDIA'S AGONISING WAIT, WINS BRONZE

https://www.ptcnews.tv/rio-olympics-2016-chak-de-sports-aug-17-2016

Rio Olympics 2016 | Chak De Sports | Aug 17, 2016

https://www.ptcnews.tv/rio-olympics-2016-chak-de-sports-aug-17-2016

Thu, 18 Aug 2016 12:07:44 +0530

Rio Olympics 2016 | Chak De Sports | Aug 17, 2016

https://www.ptcnews.tv/rio-olympics-2016-chak-de-sports-aug-16-2016

Rio Olympics 2016 | Chak De Sports | Aug 16, 2016

https://www.ptcnews.tv/rio-olympics-2016-chak-de-sports-aug-16-2016

Wed, 17 Aug 2016 12:45:42 +0530

Rio Olympics 2016 | Chak De Sports | Aug 16, 2016
