Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal on Thursday came down heavily on Congress government in Punjab for the latter’s decision to close down the popular and extremely helpful “seva kendras” in the state. The party said that the Congress government had virtually backed out of all its electoral promises , including complete and immediate debt waiver for all farmers, doubling the amount of pensions and shagun schemes, jobs for every youth, eradication in four weeks of what it had then called the “ widespread drug menace” – to name only a few. The SAD described the decision to close down seva kendras as the product of an “anti-people, insensitive and backward-looking mindset which had no concern for the welfare of the people.” “Apart from causing a lot of inconvenience to the people in resolving their routine issues with government offices for normal works, the new move will also lead to unemployment of the youth engaged in these kendras,” said the party. In a statement here, senior Akali leader Sardar Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa said that the seva kendras in Punjab symbolize the “strong bonds between the people of Punjab and Sardar Badal based on “more than half a century of their mutual love, trust and affectionate respect”. The decision to set up seva kendras was driven towards putting an effective end to the unseemly and unbearable daily harassment and disgrace which every Punjabi had to go face even in routine day-to-day interactions with government offices, officers and officials. This was a major segment of the wide ranging administrative reforms introduced in the state by the then Deputy Chief Minister Sardar Sukhbir Singh Badal,” said Mr Dhindsa. Mr Dhindsa said that access to over 70 major services including birth and death certificates, copies of official documents “The popular success of this initiative can be judged from the fact that over 30,000 people from all over the state make use of these kendras every day. Over 30 lakh Punjabis availed themselves of these services to resolve their problems or meet their needs for works in different departments of the government, “ said Mr Dhindsa. The Akali leader ridiculed the reason being advanced by the state government for closing down over 500 such kendras in rural areas. “The government quotes financial constraints as well as the lack of popular response as the reasons for closing down these kendras. 30,000 people visit these kendras every day. And as for the financial constraints, the government has enough money to extend helicopter travel facility even to its ministers but none for solving the problems of the people. On the one hand they have gone ahead to make promises of starting new schemes involving an expenditure of thousands of crores while on the other its is throwing its arms up just for maintaining a service already in force,” said Mr Dhindsa. — PTC News-
