The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today demanded the renaming of the Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University as Chotte Sahibzade Baba Zoravar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh Punjab Sports University, saying this would be a befitting homage to the supreme sacrifice of the youngest known martyrs in world history, who laid their lives for their faith as well as core human values.
In a statement here, senior SAD leader Prof. Prem Singh Chandumajra said the upcoming Sports University in Patiala district should be renamed after the Chotte Sahibzade, the younger sons of the tenth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, as every inch of the land of this region was indebted to them for the manner in which they stood up to tyranny as well as their faith establishing a unique example in world history. Stating that Congress ministers should not have fallen prey to sycophancy by suggesting that the University be named after the grandfather of chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh, the Akali leader said dedicating it to honor the unparalleled sacrifice of the Chotte Sahibzade would be most appropriate. “This will not only raise the esteem of the new institution but would also be in keeping with the sentiments of Punjabis to have a prestigious institution named by the Sahibzade”.
Asking the Congress government to revoke its earlier decision, Prof Chandumajra said the commemoration would be most befitting as the Sahibzade attained their martyrdom at Fatehgarh Sahib, just 30 km away from Patiala. He said dedicating the biggest sports University of the region to the Sahibzade would also go a long way in attracting Punjabi youth to Sports as well as weaning them away from bad influences. “The Sahibzade and their life teaches us about the core values of Sikh religion which have the answer to all our problems originating from the so-called modern lifestyle” he said, adding “we need the greatest role models to attract our youth to sports.”
