As the FIFA World Cup 2018 entered its fourth day on Sunday, European domination continued unabated. In the first game of the day, Serbia beat Costa Rica by a solitary second-half goal.
Costa Rica, better known as Ticos in the soccer world, were the surprise of the last World Cup as they made it to the quarter-finals before losing to the Netherlands on penalties. And that has been the best ever performance by the Central Americans.
They started well and shared the opening minute honours as both Serbia and Costa Rica had a good look at each others’ goal. The first half witnessed an exciting battle for supremacy as no goals were scored.
Excitement and pace continued as the two teams resumed the battle in the second half. It was spectacular work by skipper Aleksander Kolarov whose left footed shot from a free kick left the Costa Rica custodian Kelor Novas who plays for Real Madrid, helpless.
This goal was enough to see Serbia through with full three points.
Though the remainder of the game was equally exciting with good moves and attempts at goal but the scoreline remained unchanged thus disappointing fans of the Central American team.
Serbians had every reason to celebrate their dream start.
