As per the result for the first trends, Congress takes an early lead in Shahkot Assembly constituency. Congress candidate Hardev Singh Laddi Sherowalia leads with around 2000 votes in the first round, here on Thursday morning. The counting for the Shahkot by-election would be held in 17 rounds, out of which the first and the second round has come to an end on Thursday morning by 8:46 am. The results are expected to be out by 11am today. The results for the ruling Congress in Punjab is being seen as a barometer for the popularity of the 14-month-old Amarinder Singh dispensation. Over 76 percent of 1.72 lakh voters had exercised their franchise for the Shahkot bypoll on May 28 where the Congress, the SAD and the AAP were locked in a triangular battle. The bypoll was necessitated following the demise of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MLA Ajit Singh Kohar in February this year. Over 70 percent polling was reported on Monday in the bypoll to the Shahkot Assembly seat in Punjab, a poll official said. Polling, which began at 7 am, was continuing even after the 6 pm deadline as voters who had queued up earlier were allowed to cast their vote. -PTC News-
